Are the Ministry of Justice right to abandoned an inquiry into the rise of secretive Sharia councils?
Will this decision give rise to an increase in these illegal Sharia councils?

Where sharia law is the law of the land that system obviously is relevant. Where sharia law is not in precise agreement with the law in the country concerned then sharia law is irrelevant and legally unenforceable. Those who want to observe sharia law to appease their conscience are indulging in a hobby/belief which should never be opposed unless either that involves adversely affecting someone in contradiction to their rights under the indiginous law and regulations, or else if the individual in question is in some way thereby engaged in something that is against the laws and regulations in that country - for example slaughtering a sheep in the UK by slashing its throat and letting the blood into the neighbourhood gutter. If someone wants to observe a practice, sharia law or anything else, that is of no consequence to others and is entirely legal, then that should be fine. Anyone who wants to feel bound by a sharia marriage vow will obviously only obtain spitritual release through the same process - but once a legal civil divorce is obtained then no rightful law in the UK binds that person to their former spouse, it is only in the mind that this person remains bound until the entity they recognise has released them. Legally it matters not a jot which higher authoirity they choose to imagine (hloy man, god, fairy or whatever) - they are no longer married anywhere except in their heads.

I think that if you live in the UK,it should only be necessary to be married by UK law & that Sharia Law because it is foreign to this country should not have to be observed & therefore should be declared illegal. I am getting sick of hearing about people settling in this country & setting up their own rules, all who live here should abide by our rules & laws. The fact that you are married under Sharia Law Safiya is your own personal business but should not carry any weight in the UK.

Yes Ron that's the way it should be and I agree totally with what you say. However, as we seem to pander to all and sundry in this country, you can bet that nothing will change, we will still pander to those who weren't born here but choose to reside here. I doubt there would be many other countries in this world of ours who do similar.
it doesnt carry any weight ron but personally for me my Islamic marriage is the one that makes me feel im my husbands wife... english marriage is convenience so i can write on legal forms and documents 'married' and 'wife' without fear of the 'failure to provide correct info could result in legal proceedings' being enforced..... nothing more. I think its a sad state of affairs when a country will not accept different people want different ways of being married. It wouldnt affect you or anyone else for the powers that be to say 'ok' and accept Islamic or any other religious marriage, so long as those powers that be were informed of it and it was carried out according to whatever religion was being followed....
and no offence ron as ive always found you to be one of the nicer abers but
*I am getting sick of hearing about people settling in this country & setting up their own rules, all who live here should abide by our rules & laws. *
people who move here do abide in the main to uk rules and laws.... this isnt instead of uk law its 'as well as' ... like i say to anyone who comes out with the im sick of sentence.... you dont have to stay here ya know

Some of us DO have to stay here Saf and take exception of having been born here and contributed to all aspects of British life to then see things changed to accommodate what is termed the minority people coming into this country. It never used to be like this and I and many others I know feel the same way too. Perhaps we should turn it round and say, if people coming here want to stick by their cultural life they don't HAVE to come here.
But that's the point isn't it Safiya "do abide IN THE MAIN" which means that they don't all abide by our laws which is what Ron, I presume, means. And what's all this about the I'm sick sentence and we don't have to say here!! It's not us who should have to move, but the ones who won't under any circumstances abide by our laws!!!
Bet you get better protection under English and Welsh law than you would under Sharia when it comes to divorce concerning a woman.
Sharia would also allow for polygamy within marriage, with up to 4 wives, and in some exceptions the taking of an additional wife if it involves direct family of the exisitng wives.
That is completely at odds with UK (minus Scotland) law.
