I can't work out whether I'm shocked or unsurprised by this number!

Does this amount of migrants claiming benefits raise cause for concern?

Mr Griffiths doesn't care about abuse, libel or slander - he thrives on it.

A cabinet Minister may wish to protect his good name.

I wonder if any AB ers know Mr Grayling's email address?

I shall not reply to Dr Filth on this thread, as it's a waste of time, and I need a cup of tea.
I totally misread this - I thought the figure was per street.
LOL Mosaic - that's probably nearer the mark!

3%!!!!!!! anyone can bandy about a number, but the actual percentage is actually very low. what people should be worrying about instead, is the 'white trash' number of claimants whose families don't have a single earner. then the benefits bill would go down. a lot. but people only focus on 'them foreigners' who are actually entitled to claim (and not all of them are, contrary to popular belief).

Unless my maths has gone wrong, 370,000 as a % of 5,500,000 is 6.72%.

Perhaps it would be better to put the number in terms of the population of a city.

Leicester has a population of 340,000 people - so the number of migrants claiming benefits is somewhat larger than the population of Leicester.

I don't consider almost 7% low.
fine. 6.72%. but nobody seems to comment on the large majority of british people who seem to think they can spend their lives doing nowt and getting 'paid' for it. i get sick of working in a hospital (where people are fed and housed for a significant period of time) where patients claim hundreds of pounds a month and waste it on drugs, takeaway and fags while i slave for naff all. and as i said before, the families who breed on benefits and contribute nothing to society.
What percentage of British born are claiming unemployment benefits?

As a percentage.
Too true, icg. We can't afford spongers.

We have enough home grown ones, and don't need to import any more.

To be fair, our Welfare system has turned a lot of people into spongers.

How many British girls have decided to get pregnant, get a flat and earn a few bob on the side? It's a way of life.
Wonder if Dr Filth has heard from Messrs Carter, Ruck yet? (this isn't a reply to anything...)

Indeed - benefits should be there for people who can't work, not those who can't be bothered to work and therefore people who sponge off the rest of us get right on my tits, as do people who breed for no other reason than profit - they view their children as a way of getting more money from the taxpayer.

But this question is specifically about the number of migrants who have come here becuase they know we will give them free money.

I dislike paying for our own wastrels - but it is doubly galling to have to pay for foreign wastrels.
That was unworthy - perhaps Ed should pull it?
I meant my post, not yours, flip-flop.

Yes, but we capped non EU immigration so you can expect to see the tide turn.
Will that tide take out all non EU migrants with it anlyn - or will they still be here raping our benefits system.
Love your title, Lord_Elpus!

The Op's link said 258000 of the 370000 were from outside the EU, actually - I'm sure the EU figure is vastly greater than 112000, though!

The migrants who come to work and don't take jobs from British people are welcome. Over the years, our Chinese and Jewish communities, for instance, have shown strong family values and a work ethic to be proud of. You don't see many of them in the Courts.

Many Asians who have been here for a long time have a similar record.
Lord_Elpus

Are you sure about that?

Any figures, or is are you speaking from personal observation?
Lord_Elpus

Hang on - are you saying that the original Carribeans who came over during the 50s were simply looking to sponge off the state?

Surely not?
