my comment was based on two visits 3 and 9 years ago and the differences I perceive now.

For example, 9 years ago there were a lot of women in Cairo in western dress. Watching tv news now there seem to be more burkhas on show.

The Daily Mail has a habit of...let's be generous here - slightly skewing stories to fit with a specific agenda regarding Muslims.

There are literally too many now to list, but if you have a look at the terrific blog Tabloidwatch, you'll get a flavour of what they get up to.

The interesting thing is seeing all the stories that the DM have printed about Muslims and then reading the actual story.

Zeuhl, i know what you meant, i have heard similar stories from friends who have been there, but it's going to go backwards if these men have anything to say about it. And this story if honestly true, is abhorrent.

Zeuhl, I agree. At one time burkas in Cairo were conspicuous by their absence, but not any more - although many now use it as a political symbol - just as many Muslim women living in the western world do. Having said that, with the new rulers in control, it wouldn't suprise me if such attire became compulsory for women.

With people like this ruling the roost, bang goes Egypt's valuable tourist trade - but frankly, I am not surprised by this outcome.

naomi, very good points, tourism is very valuable to Egypt, so suggest all people boycott the country, might make them sit up and take notice, when the money dries up. Of course none of that is likely to happen. If they do take a retrograde step what can be done. Perhaps the women could come out on strike, do they get to vote in elections, or is that just men only as well.

Yes, women do have the vote - but how long that will last now is anyone's guess. I fear if these people get their way, they won't care about women or the economy. They will turn Egypt into something that those of us who know it will find unrecognisable.

So maybe the new leadership will be less concerned about the tourist trade than they should be.

I think many had doubts last year regarding the muslim brotherhood and Egypt, now they dominate the Egyptian government and this is the result with possibly more to come.

The UK has made it illegal (most recently in 2003). The implication is that this was done because people here want to do it too - otheerwise why outlaw it?

It seems to me an unattractive practice, but not necessarily a purely Islamic one, as the OP implies.

Naomi, as i recall some time ago this issue was discussed on AB, about Egypts ruling party, and the Arab spring. You replace one leader for another, and quite often what you get is something far worse. Look at all the countries that have ousted leaders in recent years, chaos, disorder, riots, in some cases anarchy. Then in come the hardliners, who had been waiting their chance, so it's back to the dark days, which seems to have happened with Egypt. It's what i believed could well happen, though many dismissed the idea. So what next for the other countries and their Arab Spring, you hear very little now of their fight for democracy.

I think that this is a load of hogwash and typical anti-Islamic posturing by the Daily Wail. Indeed it seems to be a load of lies and I wonder if it isn't legally inciting hatred and all the rest of being bigoted.

I haven't come on this thread of yours, AOG, as I have been spending my time looking through Egyptian and Arabic sites to see if I can locate local reference and, guess what, I can't find any.

Therefore, I would welcome your input to any such Egyptian reference, or from anybody else. Meanwhile take this story with a major pinch of salt as indeed it does go against Islamic practices for the dead....and indeed the irreverent comments may be fully justified as this article needs the pizz taking out of it, if the lawyers don't take action.

I can’t imagine where one would see evidence that this is so. I mean, it’s hardly a subject for discussion over afternoon tea, is it. Whether it’s purely an Islamic foible or not (and I’m sure it’s not), two wrongs don’t make a right, so morally, we are hardly justified in making excuses for it.
