It's being reported that attempts are being made to have a statue of Amy Winehouse at London music venue The Roundhouse. Do you think she made enough of a musical contribution to merit this? Or are your memories of her more dominated by her drink and drugs-fuelled lifestyle - ie. she was the very opposite of a good example to others - or do we simply put that down to an illness? One report I read states "The star's father Mitch, mother Janis and stepmother Jane hope bosses at the concert hall will allow the life-size sculpture to stand on the first-floor balcony next to the building's bar. They are adamant Winehouse, who died from alcohol poisoning last July, would appreciate a tribute at the venue as it is close to where she lived after shooting to fame." I can't help think this might be referring to the bar rather than her home nearby

Don't see why not - different scale admittedly, but people flock to Graceland to pay tribute to Elvis - another great star felled by drug and alcohol abuse.

There are also statues of Janis Joplin in Port Arthur and Jimi Hendrix in Capitol Hill (Seattle).

I suppose people like to celebrate an artist's life, rather than they way they died...

Be nice to think he was, but I doubt it!!
Personally I would've loved for her to have survived, but for purely selfish reasons.

My favourite British pop song of all time is 'Tears Dry On Their Own' - and I wonder how she would've progressed as an artist.

Now that I think of it...when I heard she died, I actually felt more annoyed than sad.
Rubbish Barney. How is her family to blame?
Amy made her own choices in life, after all she was over 18. Her parents couldn't stop her doing what she wanted any more than your parents could stop you. When do parents stop being responsible for their children?

As for the statue, if the owners and audience of the Roundhouse are OK with it, then I don't see there being a problem. She may not have been the role model that society wanted (most famous people aren't) but that's not what she was here for, she made an amazing contribution to music, which was why she was here. It's also nice to see from the link provided, that her foundation is very active and seems to be doing a bit of good.

I hope the poor woman is resting in peace.
the last time I was at the Roundhouse, the star was a naked woman who made a red hanky vanish then reappear about her person (interested parties may do a nsfw search for Ursula Martinez), so I expect they could cope with a Winehouse statue.

boxtops, who/what/where are you referring to with: "the divot on top of the cliff they're trying to impose on us down here."?
Is it Roy Hodgson ?
Thankfully it's not, otherwise I'd have to move, that's almost on my doorstep.
"she made an amazing contribution to music,"

Hardly, she was a good singer with an identifiable voice, I think some of you are getting a bit carried away here.

Most of her songs were just rehashed 60 soul vibes
If that's what they want, just as long as I don't have to look at it, or indeed, pay for it.
It's a matter of opinion though isn't it. You think she didn't, I know she did :) I'm not getting carried, makes not a jot if difference to me if she gets her statue or not.
baz, i rather agree with you. Good singer, but somewhat misguided, drink and drug addict, so are lots i hear you say. she was on a path of destruction that no one seemed to be able to steer her from. Pretty much like Whitney Houston. If they want to stick a statue up to her fine, if it's in the roundhouse then also fine.
"I know she did :) "

you obviously have a very limited knowledge of music and the music biz.

She was good but she wasnt that good, start putting up statues to "musicians" of her ability and you wont be able to move because of them

Thanks Toes, it is good isn't it. I think he liked her:-)

Baz you said to rocky:
you obviously have a very limited knowledge of music and the music biz.

Well Tony Bennett said of her: She was really a great jazz singer. A true jazz singer. I think he knows a bit about the music business.
Lol, baz, as I said, it's all opinion.
I think Amy was a hugely talented songwriter and on her day a truly gifted singer
Statue - why not ...
In ten years, if that, you'll hear her played on the radio once in a while, and mentioned even less.

What else was Tony bennett going to say "shes a really schite jazz singer"
I must stop this. My head's sore and the wall's not looking so good.
