The Romans didn't just land here and say here we are, let us be friends, they can to conquer Britain and did, we became part of the Roman Empire, same for the others who have crossed the channel, and seas, The Normans, Vikings, and so forth, who can say overall how many died at the hands of the conquering hordes, but many did. No one ever conquers another country and it's people without a good deal of mayhem and bloodshed

Helen, Good idea, kick out all the skivers of any nationality - brits an all!!! Why do foreign nationals come here to work - because the work is here and not being taken up by people already here, surely. They don't come over to come on the benefit systems. There are lots of Eastern Europeans living on the streets, yet still going to work every day and working hard in jobs that people here wouldn't even consider.

As to new arrivals, well they can take their chances, but quite frankly this country is too small, and financially unstable to support more people wherever they come from.

Em. I don't think immigrants these days have come over to conquer us and wipe us out. They come here for what they hope is a better lifestyle for them. If we were in their position, we would do the same.

As I have said, we need to do something to control immigration and measures are being put into place, but this has nothing to do with us being 'conquered' surely and it is not the fault of people who want to come here.

modeller, you are wasting your breath, some seem to think no matter what, we should say all are welcome to the rich tapestry that is Britain. land here with no money, no job, and no prospects is fine, if you are within the jurisdiction of the EU, you will be taken care of, can claim benefits.

It doesn't seem entirely fair mind you, and quite honestly this wasn't why the EEC was formed. But we are a million miles from that ideology.

they may not have been welcomed as such, but they werent resented as much because prior to around 40/50 years ago they never flooded in such numbers

there are lots of people who are unemployed we don't know the ethnicity of those that are, simply because that is not how it works. I see lots of black guys lolling around the streets where i live, same for Asians and some Chinese, how would i or anyone know if they are employed or out of work, you don't quite simply.

It is perfectly true AOG that there are lots of unemployed British Nationals who would not consider doing the jobs that are done by immigrants and would poo poo the amount of money that they would get for doing these jobs. The work ethic amongst Brits is very poor. We have a bad reputation and rightly so. Probably the fault of the benefits system which has evolved over the years and needs to be rectified.

Unfortunately, the Eastern Europeans are known to be hard workers so employers will take them on in favour of Brits. It is a fact!
