Will we see the Bulgarians and Romanians taking over from the Poles?

How will our schools cope let alone out benefits systems that will no doubt be milked.

We have a chocolate factory in our town that predominantly employs Eastern Europeans. The young locals that are out of work just don't want to know. Same goes with the Laundry and the veg. picking, packing plants that surround us. What is good is that the local supermarkets now stock loads of interesting foreign food!! 'o)
fruit, and hop picking used to be done by Brits, many from poor families, who enjoyed a break from the general toil of their lives, how do i know that, well my family were part of it.
These days we are trapped in a situation that those who come from abroad may well think that to earn 5 quid an hour for picking fruit is a bonus, seeing as what they would earn in their own countries for the same work.
And who with a family to feed could live on 5 quid an hour picking fruit.
Thank you Shaney
No they'd rather sit on their arse and claim benefits!
I saw that programme Shaney! It was really interesting, and backs up what I am saying.

Em. I was born and bred in London. Not just a country bumpkin you know. I do see what goes on.

Well the Eastern Europeans pick fruit for minimal wage here Em. and they feed their families and don't complain.

I don't think these days British kids would go out fruit picking or would even last a day doing it!! We are an idle race in general now. We have been spoilt by our society. The Eastern Europeans know what a hard life is all about. We did too after the war - but that is unknown to today's generation of workers!!!
dotty.

/// every worker in britain has the right to join a union and every worker in britain is entitled to the statutary miniumum wage, how can they be paid less? ///

Surely you are naive enough to believe that?

There have been numerous examples of immigrant waiting by the road side to be picked up by unscrupulous bosses, who will employ them on a daily basis, no questions asked from both sides.
i don't have a cap to doff, nor do any members of my family, who were to a man, woman, hard working, conscientious and served this country well.
Either through the armed services, or in industry, business.
Dot...Eastern Europeans don't just do minimal wage jobs. They are carpenters and plumbers etc and they will work for less than the Brits.

I have Polish neighbours. There's 5 living there, all work. So it's rent divided by 5, bills divided by 5. They can afford to take less pay.

I lived in London for many years ,it's always been a hotch potch of different cultures .That's what makes it such a vibrant place .I've worked there with all sorts and never had any aggro .
Caribbean workers were brought to Britain by Enoch Powell to staff the NHS. It is true Britain had lost men in the war - but so had the Caribbean islands, men volunteering for a war in which they were not involved.
not 100 years, FGT, my kids ancestors were Jewish and living in Stepney and Bow in the 1870s. They were furniture manufacturers in the 1900s and ran the arcades in Southend in the 1920s. all worked hard. Some came here by choice before 1900 other fled here before 1905 to escape persecution in Poland. They all worked hard, the indigenous people in those boroughs starved and lived in poverty.
Well said dorromay - she's doing a great job even though she is a voice in the wilderness .....
ummmm I wasn't making that point I was making the point that any worker is entitled to the minimum wage by law and unless they are 21 or under they get £6.09 and hour minimum or whatever it is now
AOG and just as many accounts of prosecutions and heavy fines to the gangs employing and paying those wages
LL, you don;t now though, and it's a totally different city.
AOG. Yes there are unscrupulous employers and unfortunate victims who receive virtually no wages. These are not the majority. The employers I talk about who employ Eastern Europeans are large organisations and well with the law - the Eastern Europeans are on the same pay scale as the British Nationals. They work harder and also are very agreeable to lots of overtime to increase their income. Not true of the Brits!!
jno, i am aware of that, but so were the Canadians, who also served Britain, as well as Poles, and many more besides, it was a world war, and there wasn't anyone that didn't get involved, even those that supposedly stayed neutral.
It doesn't make sense to me. Here they are saying we should be good Europeans and need to stick together to survive. But when it comes to benefit handouts we give much more away than any of our partners and the reason why most have chosen to come here in the past. If we want to stay in Europe maybe they should have the same benfits across the board so we can't be singled out.
