They wish to change the present law so that a white police officer cannot be recruited unless a black or minority ethnic person can be recruited at the same" time.
Do you agree with this or will it cause more segregation than it is meant to prevent?
They were discussing this on a radio phone-in this morning and a spokesman for the Black Police Officer's association said that "there are areas in London were black householders will refuse to open their doors to a white police officer", and he found this quite acceptable.
Where will all this end, will it be deemed necessary to send along a Rumanian police office to a house occupied by Romanians, or even a black, Somalian, Muslim police officer, to a house so occupied by a black Somalian Muslim, or women refusing unless the officer is female etc?
This is all getting too ridiculous for words in the strive to introduce a true multi ethnic Britain. When are some going to realise that we are still a majority white European Christian country, and if anyone refuses to open their doors to a police officer independent of his or her colour, the police are in their right to knock down their door.
Apart from the fact that if a white person refused to open their door because the officer was black, they would face much more than just having their door knocked down.

Err it's The Met. I'll lett you work it out.
/ but the polce force has got to be 50/50/
Err no. No one has suggested that.
As The Met is currently 90% white, If they start recruiting 1:1 now it will be a very long time before the force is '50:50'
/What happens if there is only one vacancy ?/
When is there ever only one vacancy in the Met?
/Would only mixed race be eligable or maybe albinos ?/
Good to see you have such a mature appreciation of the situation

“Is there any evidence that there is any great desire from people in the ' ethnic groups ' wanting to become police officers ? “
There obviously isn’t. If there was they would have been recruited. The Metropolitan police, despite its ridiculously damaging “institutionally racist” label is probably one of the most “right on” organisations in the country. Its senior managers are absolutely obsessed with equality, petrified of being accused of any sort of prejudice and often follow these obsessions to the detriment of the service they are supposed to provide to the public. There is already ample adequate evidence that the recruitment bar has been lowered for minorities, but still the number of minorities enlisted amount to only about 10%.
So this idea seems yet another great “initiative” promoted without much thought to address a problem that does not really exist. There is no need for a police force to reflect the ethnic makeup of the population it serves any more than it needs to be 50% female or 20% over 65 or 10% homosexual. All that is necessary is that its officers are competent.
Picture this scenario: the Met needs recruits. No minorities are keen to enlist. So, because of this new law, nobody can be recruited.
Wonderful !!! Another great idea devised by idiots.

If it is right that there's no desire in the black or other 'ethnic minorities' to become policemen, there's a question why that is so. Does it apply to other careers? If so, which ?
Baz, since you ask where I have been for the last decades, it is living and working in London. It is surprising how unblinkered you become in such circumstances

Kids will certainly hold musicians DJs and producers in high regard, because they are creating media that they consume and enjoy.
However, we shouldn't forget the influence of sports stars (especially after the many successes of black athletes at last year's Olympics), not forgetting the positive influences of Britain's successful black actors and actresses.
It's not all about Rizzle Kicks and Labyrinth - not even close.

Somebody else may have noticed that, in recent murders in the public eye, the CPS representatives have been brown. I bet some are Muslims too.
There is no shortage of black and brown solicitors in London. The law appears to be a career which gets a reasonable representation of minorities. (I am led to believe that a lot of lawyers are Jewish, but that's a minority that nobody is up in arms about now. I wonder when that stopped. Long after they were allowed in Parliament as MPs, I suspect)

Good point. And now that I think of it - the health industry is where many black and Asian professionals choose their careers.
Perhaps the truth is - black and Asian kids are more influenced by seeing successful medical professionals, rather than rappers (thinking about the number rappers in the country compared to the number of doctors and nurses).
Just a thought...

/// if anyone refuses to open their doors to a police officer independent of his or her colour, the police are in their right to knock down their door. ///
I cannot believe how many of you chose to query this statement, can you not reason things out unless they are explained fully to you.
Surely it is obvious to most that it does not mean that they would knock down the door for minor reasons, only where they had a legal search warrant etc. and had need to enter the property.
I do hope that is somewhat clearer to you?
