On a slightly different tack - I've been thinking about why there hasn't been more public outrage over this. I wonder, is it a case of "Well it's only their children they're doing it to". It's their culture and as long as it doesn't affect our children why should we get involved.
I ask this because if, for example, this country had a massive influx of people whose religious practices and culture demanded that these procedures had to be carried out on dogs or cats then the outcry would be massive.
A silly example I know but you could fill in many scenarios that would have the same effect.

One of the main factors chrisgel is, out of sight out of mind. And lets be fair, its not an easy subject to take on, not only because of religio-socio-cultural elements, but by the very nature of it being young girls bodies.

The other fact is that the numbers reflect 'British' subjects, so these people will take their girls abroad to inflict the horror on them, and unless the child is examined on return, nobody would know, and as per above young girls are either going to be brainwashed, or just unlikely to verbally reveal to anyone what has gone on down below due to personal sensitivity issues.

chrisgel, the problem with trying to undertake exams at airports in the uk, a la sweden, is that political correctness would dictate that the exams would have to be done on everybody, not just young girls returning from Africa or Asia.

How about our authorities insist that all Islamic institutions conduct regular educational sessions deploring the practice? These sessions would be audited and failure to conduct them would result in prosecution.
