It was written in an era when men lived harsh lives and women were dominated and had to know 'their place' in society.

Sadly this ethos is endemic in a lot of men in a lot of societies even to this day, even in the workplace.

The Koran also teaches that Muslims can breach Islamic Law if it for the greater good of Islam. Combine that with its teaching that those who don't meet the code of conduct must be punished and it is not hard to see how they can justify this treatment of non-Muslim women.

Even Muslim women and men are raped by gangs of men in Islamic countries for the "crime" of consorting without being married. This brutality is driven by the exact same philosophy.

Yes and Abrahamic religion of all flavors has stood in the way of reform more than any other factor.

Islam teaches that all sexual impropriety is driven by immodesty of the woman. Men have no compunction to behave decently when confronted by a woman who exposes her "sexuality" in any way.

In many places this means going into the public at all. Less extreme societies will accept that she may go into public if completely covered and accompanied by a male relative.

It is misogyny to the core.

But the sermon will be followed by another that preaches the real fault is to be borne by the immodesty of the women and that all Muslims should work to change western society to adopt Sharia Law.

The sad thing is that there are good people of Islam, Christianity and Judaism who would never personally support the misogyny undeniably embedded in their faiths are validating the position of those who do by adding to the numbers of believers.

Until these good people realise that the tenets of their faith are poisonous at the very core their support for religion will continue to be part of the problem.

Like those in Christianity whose bigoted hatred of homosexuals can be supported in the Bible, Hilaly can support his position with the words of the Koran.

The religious apologists pretend that the foundations of these religions are sound but have been misused by the extremists. The fact is that it is the moderate majority in any Abrahamic religion who have diverged from the tenets of their faith.

Extremists are called "fundamentalists" because they are following the fundamental premises of the religious texts that form the the bases of these faiths.

The principles of these faiths are rotten to the core but no believer wants to acknowledge it.

AOG, what organisations would that be, women couldn't vote, didn't have a voice, couldn't own property, couldn't succeed to a title, an estate, and those so called Christian organisations had ulterior motives, save your soul, repent you sinner from your ways. I don;t see Christianity being much use to women now, male clergy certainly don't seem to want them in the church

I personally believe that they are doing this to satisfy the people who can never be satisfied. Otherwise every Muslim knows that it is wrong and totally unacceptable. One thing I must say that if people want to blame a religion due to the actions of few people then why not punish them according to that same religion they you believe disobeyed. Being a Muslim, I know what the punishment of their crime should be. Otherwise treat them as individuals who are bad and bad people are everywhere. I am sure there are people from other backgrounds, religion, colour and countries who are committing same kind of crimes.

Then I believe there are other things in the society we have to look at. Why are so many 11 and 12 years old girls easily available in the streets for anyone to abuse them? Where are their parents? Why don't their parents or other people responsible for their well being notice when they take drugs, cigarette and alcohol at that age when even according to the law of the country it is a crime. Or perhaps parents do not have enough time for their own children.
