Doreen Lawrence To Become A Life Peer
Answers
Can I point out that she is not getting this peerage because her son was murdered, she is getting this peerage because of the work she has done to stamp out racism and her work in the community!

Errr...I think the second part of your post (the McCanns) is directed to Sqad, right?
Also, I'll be honest with you, the word 'coloured' sounds old-fashioned to me, rather than insulting. I find it kinda quaint...like the word 'courting' (which to my ears, sounds way better than 'shagging').

If I have offended you baldric, than I must say that was not intention. But the phrase "coloured" sprung out of the screen at me earlier today. I have no wish to fall out with you over this issue, as there are far better candidates here on AB for that purpose !
So, sorry for any offence that I might have caused.
I can't speak for all black people or any black people come to that, as I am deathly white, apart from my forearms. But I am fairly sure that Doreen Lawrence would much prefer to be called a black person rather than the use of some euphemism like coloured.
My father came over to London before WW2, from Ireland to look for work and I remember him telling me when I was a boy in the 1960's, of the boarding houses that had signs up saying ::
"No blacks, no dogs and no Irish" He always said that if he were black or canine, he might just have stood a chance of a room for the night but Irish was the clincher.
Language sometimes takes time to change. My neighbours here in my old mining village in South Wales still use phrases like " I'm just going down to the P***s for a pint of milk" despite the corner shop in question being owned by a Hindu family from Bombay, via Uganda ! Those neighbours seem not to understand how that offends a Hindu family. By the way, the kids of the Hindu's are tri-lingual, speaking their own language, English and now, also Welsh.
Not sure if my word above (P***s) is allowed !

On the face of it, I can see an argument to suggest that the McCanns' work for the Missing People charity deserves to be recognised...
But I think there are many (and this isn't my opinion) who still view them as culpable, in their daughter's abduction - because they left her alone on the night she was taken.
They have that slight whiff of controversy about them...

///Why would you focus on people of colour?' Doreen Lawrence criticises 139 arrests in latest illegal immigration crackdown///
Would the good folks who had a pop at me for using the word 'coloured' a couple of days ago in relation to this Lady, now like to remount their high-horses and 'have a pop' at Doreen Lawrence as well?
