Three possibilities.

Doesn't trust banks.
His local branch closed so he decided to keep the cash at home.
Hiding it from officials so he could claim pension credit, council tax credit etc.

I have no idea why old people don't trust banks, or why there are silly comments above from one poster. Banks to not commit theft of peoples deposits. Even if there is an adminstrative error it's all traceable and restorable.

A lot of elderly people feel the same they do not trust banks. I know such a person he keeps his cash under the bed, I have tried time and time again to get him to put it in a bank but he will not do it, he refused to even have a bank account until the DWP said he couldn't get his pension paid unless he opened one, and that is only a post office cash card.

Of those, I'm sure reasons 1 and 3 apply for some people. I can't imagine 2 is a reason.

plenty of people don't trust banks, ripped off over bank charges, selling them insurance they didn't need, selling them packages which they didn't need, and sundry other tricks they use to garner your cash. if you were referring to me, people have lost money with banks, or had to fight the banks when they have had their ID stolen, proof they were not in Istanbul when that 5,000 grand went walkabout.

Banks have your money and give next to, or no interest in return. It's reasonable to decide one don't want the bank to make a fortune off of your savings and treat you as sucker as a matter on principle. And again, as mentioned, it could be inconvenient of your bank closed and the next nearest is miles away. Especially if older. Besides as one gets older it's more difficult to spot the best course of action or indeed be bothered with the hassle. Which is why even formally sharp folk may need protection in later life from the scum that prey on them.

Very sad, but not uncommon - an old lady round here carried thousands of pounds around each day in her shopping trolley, because she was scared to leave it at home.

there is hardly ever a need to visit a branch in fact branches will be few and far between in the not too distant future.

I agree they need protection OG, sadly our society seems to treat this sort of thing as virtually a non crime anyway but that's another story.

..and not everyone has on-line banking, or is compos mentis enough to use an ATM. The stories about thefts while you are at the ATM is enough to put off a lot of worried people.

you don't have to visit a branch to do banking. There are thousands of cash machines and cashback outlets. Most other transactions can be handled automatically or on the phone or even, horror of horrors, online!

Used to have a neighbour like that years ago,
Kept all his money down the back of a Settee,
Thought it would be safe because no-one would ever look in the
front garden for it!

I think what would worry me more would be have 22 large in the house when I go out!
