So let me first be clear that I have no sympathy whatsoever for the men who have received this sentence. I still don't agree with the death penalty, and in this particular case there is good reason to believe that the death penalty was just a bit influenced by the wishes of the public. If that were true this would be vigilantism rather than justice.
But no, I have no sympathy for the men, and unless there has been an awful miscarriage of justice I never will. A vile and disgusting crime.

I heard that the Death Sentence is seldom carried out in India.
Whether mob pressure affects this case will be interesting.
In fact, a rest of life sentence in an Indian prison might be worse.
/I hope they do the same to them as they did to her/
No. Hopefully the Justice System in India is operating at a higher level of morality than the criminals

The women in the article seem to feel that this sentence will herald a new beginning for the women of India. It may stop men from committing such a heinous crime in the future - and this is a good thing. But it is not going to immediately and drastically change the attitude of Indian males (in general) to females.
I don't think that they should get the death sentence - they should be put in a prison where they are going to be fearful for their own safety for the next 50 years.

Baldric - the death sentence is no more a deterant than any other sentence, simply because human nature dictates that no criminal, from the Freshers wine thief to the mass murder is ever going to be caught - if that thought process was in place, no-one with any sense would commit any crime at all.
But we are dealing with the human condition - a lot of criminals are not bright enough to look ahead and understand concepts like consequences - and that is why we have crime - and punishment, and why recidivists continue to populate our prisons on a regular basis.

I`m not sure that things will change any time really soon. There have been more gang rapes in India since this one which I am surprised about as it`s somewhere that I have always felt quite safe. I would think twice about going too far on my own there now. I was recently talking to one of my Delhi based colleages and she said it is happening quite a lot (and we don`t hear about it). The latest, when i spoke to her was a case of a 5 year old girl who had been kidnapped from her house and they found here a couple of miles away being kept and abused by a gang of men. There seems to be a gang mentality among these men.
