It would be a lot quicker if these useless idiots just gave us a list of people that arent eligible for asylum...it would fit on a postage stamp
Theyll all be saying theyre homosexual now...these africans never miss a trick or a scam to get in do they
One swallow does not make a summer. I'm afraid I don't have the in depth knowledge, time, nor the inclination, to examine all aspects of EU policy to be able to provide an accurate answer.
One swallow might not make a summer but it could set somebody up in a nice wee flat on the council, with expenses.
Such judgements are easily abused. I wonder what evidence is required?
Naomi, the article says:
"The UK has a proud history of granting asylum to those who need it and applications are carefully considered before a decision is made," said a Government spokesman.
"However, applicants must establish that they face persecution and inhuman or degrading treatment in their country of origin to qualify for our protection."

yeah dont we just

"However, applicants must establish that they face persecution and inhuman or degrading treatment in their country of origin to qualify for our protection."

pure comedy
Pure comedy to you ,baz, but what criteria and standard of proof would you apply in asylum cases? Or would you abolish asylum altogether?
The problem with your views baz is that it overlooks all those cases of African immigrants drowning of the coast of Italy recently, and in years gone by too. I highly doubt they'd be taking such a risky journey if their lives weren't miserable and they weren't escaping persecution. Dismissing it as a "trick or a scam" is offensive and disgusting. No-one uproots themselves from family, friends and home without a very good reason to leave, and for such a long and dnagerous journey they'd be wanting to leave where they are rather than come here per se. Shame on you for dismissing it so lightly.
>>>if their lives weren't miserable

Plenty of people's lives are miserable in Africa, India, and lots of other countries.

Do we take them all in?

The population of India alone is about 1.2 billion and our country is just not big enough to take even a fraction of them.

Yes, we are "lucky" enough to live in a "rich" country, but we already have a population of about 60 million, and are massively in debt. Millions are unemployed over here, and much of our infrastructure is collapsing.

So do we keep taking anyone who turns up on our doorstep?

Because if we do we will never get out of debt and this country will sink under the weight of millions of extra people and crippling debt.

We have already let in far too many people and we must get MUCH tougher in the future about who we let in.

If we don't then our children, and their children, and their children, are in for a life of misery in this country.
They are not granted asylum because they are miserable, or in poverty, or desperate to leave their homeland. If that were so, we might have to take millions ! No, the criteria for asylum status are as set out above.
African turning up on our doorstep.

African: "I am gay, will you let me in, I am being persecuted".

UK Border control: "OK if you are gay and being persecuted we will let you in".

African: "Thanks, can I bring in my wife and 4 children as well?".
actually vhg, anyone turning up on our doorstep:

"will you let me in?"

"Yes. here's a train ticket to East Croydon, please report to Lunar House".

How many actually follow the instructions to the letter? What do you think?

Very easy to say that, but please tell us, how do they prove that they are in fact in danger etc in their own countries, or do we just have to take their word for it?

If the later is the case, then how do we control the millions who want to come to this country?
jim360

Very emotional feelings Jim, if not a little naive.

Tell me Jim would you take anyone into your home, who knocked on your door stating that he was leading a pretty miserable life, and that he had taken a very long and dangerous journey to arrive at your home?
VHG

/// African: "Thanks, can I bring in my wife and 4 children as well?". ///

4 children? obviously a more responsible African, one who practices birth control methods no doubt? :0)
I have seen many people who have arrived in the back of lorries at Purfleet and all the old bill do is give them a map to Croydon, they do not give them a ticket or money for the fare. They just want them to go away and become a problem somewhere else.
baza, a number of years ago, a number of disheveled individuals spilled out of a truck on to the hard shoulder of the M1 near Nottingham. following a tip off, they were apprehended by the police and demonstrated to be illegals. having been arrested by the police, the were released into the care of the UKBA, who promptly released them.

why does our government even bother with laws regarding who can and cannot legitimately live here when there's clearly no intention to enforce it?
Doesn't This Judgement Show The Eu To Be A Decent, Liberal, And Humane Place?

Whilst the individual nations of Europe may be many of those things the European Union cannot claim to be so because it does not have a unified "corporate identity" to which all its citizens subscribe. However, leaving that aside, this policy shows nothing of the sort.

All it Ishows is that those responsible for this pronouncement are purposefully naïve and profligate with their taxpayers’ money and facilities. All that Africans have to do now to successfully claim asylum is to say they are homosexual and - hey presto - the world is their oyster (well, at least the bit that calls itself the EU is).

No checks will be made. Rather like Mr Kebede from Somalia. Regular readers may remember him. He was the gentleman who it was revealed last week had won a court case forcing Newcastle City Council to pay for his “educational needs” in the form of £10k worth of flying lessons. He had, apparently, been abandoned by his father after Mr Kebede Snr’s asylum claim was rejected in 2004. As far as he knew, he said, his father was either in prison or had been killed because of his political beliefs. In fact he works as an air traffic controller at Addis Ababa airport and lives with his wife (Mr Kebede Jnr’s mother) in a £90k house - which he built himself following his ejection from the UK - in one of the more affluent areas of that city. Mr Kebede Jnr is said to be in regular contact with his father (which perhaps explains his aspirations to follow a career in aviation). Further, following his “abandonment” Mr Kebede Jnr claimed to be 15 meaning he was a “looked after child” and placing the onus of his care on to the taxpayer. It fact it transpired he was 20.

It’s a great pity that life is miserable and wretched for some people in Africa. Life was miserable and wretched for many people in the UK and the rest of Europe many years ago but the population did not up sticks to foreign lands and expect the population there to pay for their horse riding lessons.

It is not a great stretch to imagine that, once word gets round, this sort of deception - but based on the grounds of homosexuality - will soon become widespread throughout the EU and once again individual nation states will be forced to accept huge numbers of migrants who say they will suffer inhuman and degrading treatment should they return home. Just like Mr Kebede Snr apparently has.
@jim

Shame on you for dismissing it so lightly.
