there were no state benefits in the manner we have now, so anyone coming here in the war years, and before generally had to work for their bread and butter. As to learning English, some obviously haven't been to the capital lately, many of our shopkeepers English is poor at best. And why should anyone be entitled to state benefits on arrival, no one should and that includes anyone in the EU. You should have to do proper paid work for at least a year, not land on the doorstep with your handout and expect to be given benefits, house etc. It makes me mad that some on here see it as always a way to bash immigrants, however it's the politicians who make the rules, laws, blame them for this mess.

Why aren't we like Canada, Australia and others with immigration? They demand that you have sufficient funds in the bank to support you, there is a valid job to go to when you arrive and you speak, read and write decent English. Simple !!
It has to be said this Government is a load of spineless creatures.
