Time for some to wake up and smell the coffee?

Or just smell what they're shovelling?

each answer may be different, they may be your mates, but mates don't always agree.
You could promise to cut immigration from the hundreds of thousands to the tens of thousands and really test how gullible the electorate is.
Simple cuts won't stop the increasing population issue. One needs to stop immigration except for exceptional circumstances, or things will simply deteriorate at a slower rate. We already struggle to find resources for all here already, and seem to want to build further and further until the whole place if nothing but concrete; so one wonders when the powers that be will feel it is time to call a halt.
Poll says people want less immigration. Astonishing. Jake's point about free petrol and shoulder rubs is, in the circumstances, entirely relevant.
Perhaps you can explain it then, because neither Emmie or I saw the relevance - and Jake hasn't responded.
The point about polls is that they often ask questions for which people see no downside

Want to cut immigration? - want free petrol?

Hey what's not to like?

Well free petrol will encourage people to drive more increased air pollution and conjestion etc.

Oh I didn't think of that

Cut immigration, drop in workers companies can't get the people they need locate abroad fewer jobs - aging population supported by smaller young working demographic - country's economy declines

Oh I didn't thnk of that

Polls often ask complex questions in a very simplistic way of people who aren't able to see or calculate the potential consequences

They don't tell you what's a good thing to do

They do tell you who's winning the propaganda war for people's opinions
>>>>country's economy declines

Ah yes, because with all this immigration our economy is so robust !
Jake, Ah, I see. So what you’re saying is that people who think differently to you are too stupid to give a considered opinion. That figures. ;o)
People are not against immigration per se.

But on a daily basis we see a situation where we have 2.4 million people on the dole (or whatever the figure is). so we are paying all these people NOT to work.

And at the same time we are allowing (or not stopping) thousands of immigrants coming in who DO find jobs and WILL work.

So I think the anger for many people is that politicians for decades have seemed "happy" to pay out benefits to people who have no intention of working AND had a very lax border controls to allow people in who do seem to be able to find jobs.

Other countries, like say Australia or the USA, are very strict about who they let in. You have to have a job promised to you, or skills the country needs.

We seem to let in any old rubbish, people with no skills, who cant speak English, and have no intention of integrating. We seem to have no control sat all.

We also seem to allow them to bring in their parents, many of whom are of course very old and are just going to be a burden on our society (as if we have not already got a problem with an aging population the last thing we need is more).

I think MUCH of the anger with immigration is how poorly our politicians have handled the whole thing, not just Labour, not just the Tories, but all of them, for the last 40 or 50 years.

THAT is where much of the anger is, against the politicians.
Stop immigration altogether, make all jobs available to British population those that refuse who are fit for work stop the handouts, when we achieve negative dole & all healthy Brits are in work then allow vetted immigration to start once more ( all immigrants to be allowed in if they have a guaranteed job to come to & somewhere to live & NO support from government until they have paid into the system for 12 months, a list of charges for NHS treatment to be drawn up & strictly adhered to for the 1st 12 months ) then & only then will we get the whole immigration mess sorted.

>>>>Stop immigration altogether

Simple idea but totally impossible to enforce.

Firstly we cant stop people from other EU countries come here (until we make the sensible decision to get out the EU).

Plus much immigration (certainly illegal immigration) is people coming here on short term visas (for education, to visit relatives etc.) and then over staying their welcome and not going home. Once they are "lost" in their ethnic ghettos they are impossible to find.

Plus other illegal immigration is people coming here in the back of lorries and so on.

I am not saying we cant do more about immigration (and I wish we would) but stopping immigration altogether is just a pipe dream.
One can make the effort VHG. All citizens should be on one government record or another. Even those who hide should become apparent at some point whether is a need for hospital treatment, or a driving offence or welfare claim.
"We seem to let in any old rubbish, people with no skills, who cant speak English, and have no intention of integrating."

and have you and others never wondered why that might be ?

dont forget, this eussr empire dream has been around for a long time.

the more people you get in from outside the less chance there is of them caring about this countrys heritage , culture identity etc, so they couldnt care less if we get taken over by the eussr.

suits the eussr down to the ground
I think some of our new Romanian neighbours have shown remarkable initiative. To come here with next to nothing in their pockets and set themselves up as Big Issue sellers, and use Family Credit to support the fledgling business, is commendable.
One arguement for allowing immigration is that they are the ones with a 'get up and go ' mentality. There may be some merit in that arguement but they don't just come as dynamic individuals , they rapidly bring in all their relatives, who range from babies to grand parents, most of whom have to be supported by our benefit society. A neighbour of mine came here as a nurse , within 12 months her extended family joined her ,' for a holiday. Surprise ,surprise they were still here 3 years later and then moved to a bigger house. Not bad on a nurses salary !
If they took any notice of the public we would not even be in the EU!
I do hope there is a chance to put your last post to the test, Tora.
The Office of National Statistics calculates we need 7 million immigrants over the next 50 years to maintain levels of economic activity, support the ageing population and prevent our levels of national debt increasing.
