If there is anybody left who thinks that Sharia law is in any way just, perhaps this might just convince otherwise. Jailed for being raped !

So if the sentences had been reversed, all the men got suspended sentences and the Ethiopean woman got whipped 40 times, would that have been fairer?
from a Sudanese newspaper
After the court case began on the 6 February, the charges against the woman and the seven alleged perpetrators were upgraded to include Articles 151 referring to scandalous acts, 154 relating to prostitution, and 146 which refers to adultery.

A police officer who spoke to the victim shortly after her ordeal, but decided against pursuing an investigation as it was the Eid Al Fitr holiday has been charged with negligence, while a security officer who distributed the video online will also face trial.

SIHA said the woman, who is married and was about three months pregnant at the time of the attack, initially decided not to report the rape out of fear after her attackers threatened further violence.
according to that piece she is still in jail. I read through it again, and the piece in the Sudanese paper,
// Because they knew they'd got away with it by then? //

If so they were wrong. They were sentenced to be whipped 40 times. Ouch!
better than being gang raped i suppose.
// SIHA said the woman, who is married and was about three months pregnant at the time of the attack //

From mikeys original post.

// She had also faced charges of adultery and prostitution, which could have led to a penalty of death by stoning, but these were dropped after she convinced the court she was divorced. //

Married? divorced? We are not getting a true picture.

She had also faced charges of adultery and prostitution, which could have led to a penalty of death by stoning, but these were dropped after she convinced the court she was divorced, reports SIHA
to save herself being stoned to death perhaps,
// better than being gang raped i suppose. //

That is an unproven crime not the sentence.
What if the men were telling the truth? They had paid for sex and the next thing they know, they are facing the death penalty.
and what if they are lying and have essentially got away with rape.
being whipped i am sure would be very nasty, but not half as much as being gang raped.
Which is why it was unfortunate that she did not report the rape at the time.
if you did read the piece then it gives the explanation.
what i don't understand is if the men knew that there are heavy penalties for this type of material, why would they do it at all, post it on line.
my post at 20.10 does give a reason
Emmie,

I assume you are referring to this.

// A police officer who spoke to the victim shortly after her ordeal, but decided against pursuing an investigation as it was the Eid Al Fitr holiday has been charged with negligence //

Again, the assumption is that the policeman is negligent and he did not report it because it was holiday time. Those are unproven allegations. He has been charged with negligence not convicted of it. He may not have pursued it because he didn't think her story was credible or another reason. Being charged and being convicted are different things.
i had already posted that - he has been charged. as has the person who loaded the film.
The reporting of this event is shoddy and has an agenda.

Unsubstantiated claims are reported as fact. Peoples' defences ignored. The picture portrayed is that the system punishes women but lets the men off.

In reality, the Sudanese Attorney Genernal (sounds like they may be following our model of justice) has to deal with the known facts and the law. He cannot accept unproven allegations. He cannot believe heresay and ignore video the evidence.

In the end we are left with the impression that in Sudan women have no rights and are constantly in danger. I suspect that is a gross exaggeration.
and i suggest like many of these backwards countries its not an exaggeration
and that many countries that were making inroads in education, and welfare of women, are going backwards, Turkey, Egypt, even Afghanistan, before the Taliban got their claws in, many women were educated, perhaps not all, read the works of Khalid Hosseni, growing up in Afghanistan.
