Can I add to my previous post ....Labour seem to be in control of 28 Councils and the Tories in control of only 17. UKIP have yet to win enough seats to control a single Council. An earthquake ? ...perhaps a small tremor !

And chili...Labour gained 102 council seats up until now. How is a major disappointment ? Surely if there is a major disappointment this morning, its that dave has 97 seats ?

In a mid term contest with an unpopular Government you would expect them to lose a lot of seats, and they have.

We have an unusual situation at the moment in that we have two parties of Government and two parties of opposition.

The Government parties have done equally badly, and the parties of the opposition equally well.

The gains for UKiP are very good, but even though they are expected, the gains for Labour are a good result as well.

I doubt a different Labour leader would have made any differece to Labour's performance. They have been very poor in opposition, but that is in all departments, not just leadership.

Face it, Miliband and Labour were expecting far more via projections than what has subsequently transpired.
Whilst not a disaster, it's seen across the political spectrum as a failure to capitalise.

Can't argue with that. If I'm honest, I was expecting more substance from Red Ed on the strength of his performances at the ballot box, where I've generally found he has bested Dodgy Dave, IMHO.

Chili....I will agree that is a certain failure to capitalise as much as Labour would have liked but to gain 105 seats is hardly a "major disappointment"

It would be unwise to extrapolate too much from the gains and losses of last night but the Tories have lost 97 and UKIP has gained 89. The LibDems lost 102 and Labour have gained 105 ! It would seem that it might be that UKIP have gained from the Tories and Labour have gained from the LibDems...much as was predicted for months now.

Aren't any right-wingers on here going to even try to speak up for dave this morning ? He has had a disastrous night but it appears to be like the Elephant in the Room to many. This is just 4 years after he won the General Election, at least with the help of the LibDems. He keeps telling us that "things are getting better" Unemployment is falling, so he says. The recession is slowly receding, again, so he tells us.


So, if all this is true, why have the Tories done so badly ?

The results are changing every few minutes. I am going to the fishmongers now to buy my Friday fish ( old Catholic habits die hard ! ) and these figures will have changed again, I'm sure, but the trend is there for anyone to see.

I would be hugely surprised if the situation will reverse over the next hour or so !

And as I type an independent political analyst on Sky says that Labour have failed in real terms and that they are simply not effective as a party in opposition.

Because Labour voters have conveniently short memories - and many of the others have registered a protest vote with Ukip against immigration and our membership of the EU. I wouldn't have thought it that difficult to comprehend, Mikey.

Now that ukip have made significant gains in local councils they will have to come up with some policies to sustain them other than keep the pound.
