Its a long time since I did any criminal law so we probably need New Judge to tell us chapter and verse. He MAY be eligible for early release, but that will be on tag and subject to instant recall.
5 years 9 months I make that 69 months. As it is over 4 years he has to serve 2/3rds before release can be considered it is NOT automatic as in a sentence of under 4 years. So after 23 months he can apply to the parole board for release.
He will probably get sent to an open prison as a cat D prisoner.
Sex offenders are usually safe in an open jail as the other prisoners know that harming them would mean anyone who hurts them would get immediate transfer to a closed jail .

According to sentencing remarks he will serve half.

"With remission and the prospect of being 'tagged' how soon could he be released? Is two years likely? "
Unless he gains release under health grounds he will be released at the halfway point, i.e. thirty four and a half months. He is not eligible for the "Home Detention Curfew" tagging scheme as that is only available to prisoners sentenced to less than four years.
"Releasing on licence after half way through the sentence is for those less than 4 years. "
No that's not correct, Barmaid. It is the HDC scheme that only applies to those sentenced to less than four years (as above). (I think your later post gives the correct info.).All prisoners sentenced to a determinate sentence are automatically released at the half way stage. This release is automatic and unconditional.
