Ken Clarke is looking for work. He wants to be Tory leader. What would you expect him to say?

Well all things EU have been his pet subject for the past 30 years. The Tory party has it's share of Europhiles so when one as prominent as Clarke starts doubting the Euro it's means there really are serious problems with it. I don't see that the leadership is relevant, there is a major pro euro part of the party. In fact the party is split in a very similar fashion to Labour on this subject.

I'm not saying Kenneth Clarke would not be a good leader based on his own record: he never minced his words, and he bent over backwards to protect Britain's interests in Europe, whereas Mandelson really came at the last minute and Blair had to take it on the chin. The labour party has always had a queer approach to Europe and manufacturing in the UK remains limited to cottage industries. Maybe the queen should get involved once again.
