Fed Up Exam Results News ....

Anyone else fed up with the amount of coverage of GCE exam results given on all the news channels today? Only their family and friends appreciate this exciting time for them, I'm not remotely interested, in my opinion, it just takes up valuable air time when it could be given to more interesting things - more coverage of the historic Lancasters and Vulcan flight for example, that news item only lasted less than 2 mins!
People came to Lincolnshire today from all over the UK, there was a family from Aberdeen and another from Romford, who had travelled miles to see this once in a lifetime opportunity, they could have interviewed them ........

Couldn't agree more. When I got my exam results many moons ago, no fuss, just a quiet sense of satisfaction.

I was on holiday in a caravan for a fortnight when my exam results were posted to me - no other means of communication in 1964! I had to wait 10 days not knowing my results. Of course my family celebrated with me about the results but in those days we didn't bore everyone else in the country with them.

a lot more people have an interest in GCSEs than Lancasters, surely? Something over 250,000 of the former (that's just the students, not their families), and how many saw the flypast?

I am sick of this young people bashing. Every year, on the same day the GCSE or A level results come out. This is a way bigger thing for than some old aircraft flying about (although I do appreciate it). Maybe people would be more interested in stories of youngsters kicking the *** out of someone. Poor sods can't win.

It does seem a bit mean-spirited to criticise what is positive coverage of young peoples accomplishments. They can't win,and neither can the media for some good news. Its only one day a year...besides,how many news reports do any of us hear in a day? One or two?

I didn't say they shouldn't be very proud of themselves for all their hard work, they should, and I wish them all the best in their futures! It's just that there seems just too much news coverage, with the same thing on every news programme - footage of one student opening their envelope etc. I'm not interested as I have nobody taking exams in my family, I suppose I would be if I had. I'm not knocking young people at all, you are misinterpreting my comments.

I am not remotely fed up Ann. Its only once a year and its an uplifting sight to see so many of our children doing so well at school. Our young people don't always get the best press in Britain and its wonderful to them in some good light.

I can't say I'm fed up with the coverage of the exam results to be honest.

I'm sure a full magazine programme will be made about the historic aircraft and anyone interested in that event will be able to watch more about it. Far better away from the news channels really.

Only a couple of days so not that much of a bind, the political nonsense around ut is more irritating, comparisons of results, is the education systems failing etc etc.... It's all hogwash. No political party can leave the system alone for long enough to see trends all I know is I wish I'd been doing my O grades/Highers/SYS stuff now rather than 30 years ago.....looking at what my own kids did its so much more relaxing now.....

I know what you mean, Ann. And you're entitled to your opinion. Some people on AB seem to find it difficult to express an alternative opinion without getting a bit 'nasty'.

I tend to agree with you Ann. Most of the stories are rubbish anyway and all are clearlys setup. When was the last time you saw someone open an envelope to see failure yet many do fail.

And what about the failures, surely having all the success rammed down their throats could push them over the edge(An I know it does because I am very close to somene that works in that field)

Today's Daily Mail...." Triplets with 38A* and A grades"....nothing lower.

I just don't get Education today.

I only got one A* (as it was then) and that was my top mark......an obvious failure amongst today's scholars.
O.K I was not the brightest in the class, but was certainly no fool.

But we see this more and more today, acclaim, celebrations for attainments which 50 years ago would be regarded as ......normal.

mikey...don't be silly.....of course we are pleased for those kids, the point of discussion is how the "landscape" has changed depicting degrees of success over the past half century.
