It's not the individual people themselves that I despise. How could I - I don't know any of them, nor would I suspect does anyone else here. Rather it's the institution and concept of monarchy which I find so loathsome - the fact that a mere accident of birth brings with it such privilege. I can't find any reason, practical, moral or otherwise to justify its continuation.
"But the Queen works so hard", they say. So what! Lots of people work hard! That's a non-argument.
"But they bring in so many tourists!" No they don't, not personally. No tourist other than, perhaps, the reddest of necks visits Britain because they actually think they're going to meet the Queen. They'd still come to Buckingham Palace whether there was a royal family or not, just as they continue to come to Versailles in their droves.
Private Eye's headline "Woman Has Baby" pretty much summed it up when William and Kate had their first.

So are you a communist jeffa? Birth -accident or otherwise - brings privilege to some and poverty to others. A child born into any wealthy family will be privileged whether that wealth has been accumulated through hard work, artistic talent or inherited land. If Monarchy was abolished tomorrow I doubt it would make any difference, as as an Institution it is self-contained and self financing. Stopping paying the Royal Families' wages would certainly not mean they's be queuing up down the local food bank. It would just mean they would stop all their 'royal' work and get on with enjoying their lives.

Sorry Retro...I am not a Royalist in any shape of form, and it irritates me that this "news" item will dominate the headlines for the next few months, when there are so many other much more important things that need discussing. I have raised 2 this afternoon in NEWS.
People have been having babies since for ever, and this includes the Royal Family, although not all of us are lucky enough to have Harley Street on standby, waiting for it to happen...can't we just get over it and get on with something more important ?
