Some of the Village People were gay.
Victor Willis (the Policeman) and Glenn Hughes (the Biker) were straight while Felipe Rose (the American Indian), Randy Jones (the Cowboy), David Hodo (the Construction Worker), and Alex Briley (the Military Man) were gay.
Also at the time, many straight people didn't know that the VP were presented as gay 'clones'.
The American forces were extremely close to using 'In The Navy' as a promotional tool, until a marketing executive had a quiet word with the PR company involved.

The "I'm glad my child is gay" brigade does not exist.
What you are referring to is the relief that many parents feel that their child is happy, rather than tortured (quite a few parents already know before their child comes out to them).
And you will probably find that fewer and fewer parents see being gay as some sign of societal handicap, because over time, the barriers to living a happy gay life are being broken down.
It's not the furtive shame-based life that it was in the last century.
If you compare the attitude of older people with the 'who cares...whatever' attitude of many younger (non-religious) people, you can see that being gay is less and less of an 'issue' to many straight parents...
...that is...straight parents who have other kids to provide them with grandchildren, as gay parenting is still relatively uncommon.

// if you asked parents-to-be to tick the appropriate box, e.g. do you want a straight/ gay child: overwhelmingly (I suggest) the answer would be "straight".//
Well, yeah... but they would also overwhelmingly tick boxes that said looks like George Clooney, moneymaking zeal of Bill Gates, and IQ of Einstein. Which is why it's pointless asking them to tick boxes, and nobody does so. Parents just deal for better or worse with the child they've got and they times they live in.

I expect most mothers would just want a healthy child. Whether it might be gay would probably not enter most mothers' minds I'd guess. And as your child isn't born with a label stuck to its forehead stating it is gay or straight then you might not know for many years that the child you adore and would give your life for, is gay. Remember that child did not choose to be gay, many fight for years to deny their sexual orientation for fear of what their parents' and peers' reactions might be. And some parents, as we all know, never speak to that child again which is a tragedy for both parents and child.
And I want to know what a blue needle is as well please.

There is in my opinion a third gender...as per same sex couples born that way. Each to his own, they can't help it anymore than heterosexual couples being heterosexual too. I don't think anyone accepts anything out of the ordinary to themselves, if only the third gender was established then there would be no need for any of this, it would be natural and people would accept it as 'the norm'.
I have a nephew who came out as gay about 10 years ago. He has been in a loving relationship with his partner for about 4 years. They are extremely happy together.
Exchange "nephew" for "niece" and "he" for "she" in the above. Does your attitude change?
His mother found it hard to accept at first and still believes homosexuality is a path he has chosen rather than an orientation he was born with.
I'm just pleased that he has found someone to care for who cares for him.

DB....when I was taken in to have my c/section I was asked what I wanted.... I ordered a red haired/7lb/girl.....sexuality never entered my head..
I'm not disappointed that she's blonde.....and I would have been as happy with a boy.
I really have thought about what you are saying.....there is only one reason I would, if I could, choose not to have a gay child.....
It's not to do with who he/she falls in love with....or what they do in the privacy of their relationship.....it's not to do with not having grandchildren....how they choose to dress or behave.....lord I can't talk there.....
The one and only reason I would choose to have a straight child is to spare them the attitudes and hurtfulness of people who seem to think there is something wrong with being gay......I have witnessed the aftermath of homophobia...it's ugly.....as are homophobes.
