Zeuhl - "Six of one and half a dozen of the other

clearly the gentleman is being disingenuous:
‘all because I asked a question and apparently dared to use the M word.’

No

He was implying that only Muslims should be subjected to anti-terrorist searches - which is both stupid and rude"

I think the security people should be been a little more willing to look at the situation realisitically.

Older people simply lose the ability to employ that discretion filter that we use daily to prevent what goes through our minds from coming out of our minds simultaniously.

It is a fact that older people lack a sense of tact and discretion in these situations.

My mother-in-law - last time she travelled with us, had to be warned repeatedly not to make a fuss if she was searched at the airport, and not, under any circumstances to refer to anyone's race, and not to mention the B word.

We are able to prepare in that way because we are seasoned travellers, and are aware of how touchy security people can be.

Not everyone is that fortunate, so a degree of common sense should have been applied here.

The gentelman's remark was probably filppant rather than offensive - because that is what old people are like!

Could there be an element of dimentia involved here? maybe undiagnosed, but still present - and maybe an allowance could be made.

To allow the full legal process to carry through is a significant waste of time and public money, which benefits no-one, and leaves airport security looking nasty and heavy-handed.
Again, referring to alloawances for old people - my wife's aunt and uncle visited us at the weekend - Auntie Margaret is well away with the faries these days.

So when she pointed at my eldest daughter and asked me if she was my wife, what could i do other than smile and point out who my daughter was, and that my wife was across the room, also smiling, because that is what old people need - a little compassion and a little leeway because they don't always appreciate the impact of what they are saying all of the time.

LOL

Andy - You sound like an episode of 'Outnumbered'
they should buy some supplies of the increasingly scarce commodity, common sense, and feed it to these wombles. Ok bit of a silly thing to say but really, 6 months of criminal endevor and cost because UKBA where too dim to get it into perspective.

Could there be an element of dimentia involved here?

Where did that come from?
It's a bit random!
"Could there be an element of dimentia [sic]involved here? maybe undiagnosed, but still present - and maybe an allowance could be made."
Is the author of this remark being flippant or offensive, I wonder?
I would think the police and authorities are completely sick of the amount of time and money that is spent sorting out trivial, schoolyard name calling - particularly when there are so many serious crimes being committed. If the security guard had any people skills, he would have had a word with the man and nipped the situation in the bud. I have had the term "You are only saying that because I`m black" said to me at work. I`m perfectly capable of handing that without calling the police. OK, the guy was an idiot and I have no time for people who think security and checks don`t apply to them but some staff need to get a grip.
Okay, what's the 'B' word?
I wondered whether the B word was bomb

/// Older people simply lose the ability to employ that discretion filter that we use daily to prevent what goes through our minds from coming out of our minds simultaniously. ///

No Older people do not simply lose the ability to employ ther discretion filter as yopu put, but were brought up in a world that once allowed people to speak their mind.

And to say "Could there be an element of dimentia involved here? maybe undiagnosed, but still present - and maybe an allowance could be made", was much more offensive to us older people than the remark "I am not a Muslim" could ever be.

Perhaps you would care to apologise for that remark Andy?

Incidentally dementia is not only an old person's disease, younger persons can also be effected.

no the N word is a bomb!
I don't understand why people are still making daft comments to airport security officers.

I agree that a stern lecture and a few hours delay would have been sufficient though.
The 'Shoe Bomber' led to us having to take off our shoes for inspection.

Why didn't the 'Underpants Bomber' have a similar effect?
/that once allowed people to speak their mind. /

an over-rated practice

especially when people like the gentleman in this story display the meagre contents of their mind.

See how your off the cuff dementia remark can trigger the trolls on this site.
1. What a complete overreaction, and a ridiculous waste of time and energy.

2. Under no circumstances should you ever joke with security personnel at airports. You say nothing unless asked and you answer briefly and factually. Anything else is a minefield.

3. He doesn't look anywhere near 75 years old. I'm impressed.

I don't need any compassion from you or anyone else.

See how silly we must seem to all these young AB whipper snappers, kids are so cheeky these days, but there is one certainty everyone is getting older each and every day.
/trigger the trolls /

not necessarily trolling aog

perhaps it's people 'speaking their mind'

so i expect you to approve wholeheartedly
/everyone is getting older each and every day./

true

but some people are getting more older than others

:-)
