Was He Being Racist And Is It Racist.
This is the cartoon that was on Mario Balotelli's Instagram account, my personal opinion is its the opposite, hes telling people to like everyone regardless of where they are from, is it a fuss about nothing and are people being over sensitive. ?

And when the phone went down you would say to the wife
''what a pathetic lost shadow of his former self and an irritating boorish numpty that Paul Gascoigne is"

Almost!
I would offer Paul non-judgemental empathy and sympathy on the phone. When I put the phone down, I would come back from the soundproof booth where I was taling into the terraced house living room which was the accomodation of the branch I was in - it may have changed now with more modern technology.
If i felt the need to talk about the call, i would do so with the volunteers who were on shift with me.
When I got home, I would not talk about the call, or any call or visit with anyone outside the centre - a status that remains to this day.
What goes on in the centre, stays in the centre, and any opinions I had, I would keep to myself - and still do.
But like i said - that was then and there - this is here and now, so I am free to air my opinions and views with the same freedom as anyone else.
Again, I hope this has cleared up any misunderstanding.

Talbot - "Ah.... change 'wife' for Fred or Freda George or Georgia then.
You can see my point though?"
No, not really, and I am not trying to be difficult or agumentative here.
Your original query was - would I express the opinion I have posted on here to a caller when I was a Samaritan volunteer?
As I explained, I would not - it's not the way counselling like that works. My opinions are not relavent or appropriate.
Your second query was was - would I - as a Samaritan volunteer - offer support on the phone, and then *** off the individual afterwards? And my answer was - no I wouldn't - it's not the mindset you bring to a shift in a centre.
Then you quite correctly concluded that any exchange of views would be with another volunteer(s) within the confines of the room, and to no-one outside.
The thrust of my point is - you have a specific approach and attitude to people you encounter as a Samaritan volunteer, which includes offering the same level of sympathy and support to anyone and everyone, regardless of what they tell you.
Outside that environment - I am an individual like anyone else with my views and opinions, and on a site like this, I express them freely, and debate with others - so I remain unsure of what you are getting at - but do please come back so I can make sure I am not causing any confusion with my responses.

Talbot - "andy has just said how it operates."
I have said how it operated twenty-five years ago - in a pre-internet and mobile phone age - it could have changed a lot since then, although I am sure the core principles and operating methods remain essentially the same.
But I am still waiting for a response to your cryptic post - ?

Whilst the anti-racist intentions of the poster may be laudable - that last line (about Jews) rings a sour note.
It's the one negative stereotype. All the other stereotypes are pretty harmless, but the whole 'money-grubbing Jew' thing just doesn't...
Tell you what - if you went into the office tomorrow, and were introduced to a new chap called David Steinberg, would you jokingly say, "Ah, you must be working in Finance...seeing as you're Jewish!"
Do you see what I mean?
It's just...I dunno...ugly...

Talbot - "Nothing too cryptic, you have basically said to be a Samaritan you have to put up a facade.
Not at all.
We are all individuals, but we all adjust our perceived persona according to our circumstances – you are different at work than you would be with your friends, or at home, or with a loved one, or at a football match … the list goes on, we all temper our outward attitude depending on our environment, but that does not change who we are, nor does such behaviour represent a ‘façade’.
To be an effective Samaritan counsellor, you need to listen, and encourage the caller to talk to you. That means you shelve your views, or advice, your opinions, your interruptions. This is not a chat, it is someone telling you something they are unable to confide in anyone else, and keeping your own personality out of the mix simply assists that situation.
That is not pretending to be someone you are not, it is merely shielding your personality because it is not needed here – just your willingness to listen and attempt to understand where possible.
So no, there is no ‘façade’ involved – once again I hope I have corrected in misunderstanding – but do post back if you have further opinions or statements – this is exactly what is done here!

ummmm - "I still don't think that you can compare Balotelli with Gascoigne.
PGs issues were there in his hay day."
Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
Gascoigne's inability to behave like an adult and his inability to manage his lifestyle - including raging alcoholism - were brushed off as being 'laddish' to use another poster's adjective.
It was only when his football career ended, and he was not longer tolerated for the money he generated, or spent on his cotery of 'friends' and hangers-on, that people were able to stop pretending that a damaged individual was simply 'high-spirited' and face up to his very real and serious issues.
I would not be surprised if Balotelli followed the same path - he is clearly an immatures volatile headstrong individual, who again is tolerated for his footballing abilities (the merits of which are beynd my remit) but that is a finite skill level - we shall see.
