Was This Death Caused Deliberately Or Was It Just An Unfortunate Accident Caused In The Process Of An Arrest?
114 Answers
Yet another black man killed by a white police officer, and who is later cleared by a Grand Jury, which has again triggered off riots.
The unfortunate victim was a large powerful man, how else could the police officer manage to wrestle him to the ground and thus prevent him from going through the plate glass window of the store?

/// The video does not lie AOG, have you watched it?, he may be big but he did not swing a punch, he did not aim a kick. He hardly resisted arrest and he is dead. ///
I have watched what may or may not have been an edited video. The man was waving his arms about warning the officers not to touch him, and has I have said previously there was a danger he could have gone through the plate glass window.

"Oh wouldn't we all like to see your reaction if you happened to be placed in a situation such as these officers found themselves in?"
Why should that matter? None of us has had training (or at least, most of us won't have) in how to arrest someone, and yes I expect very few have experiences that even come close to that. But broadly the point remains that the job of police is to bring criminals to justice. That means, ideally, alive so that they can face trial. Certainly for such a petty crime as this there is no reason for them to end up dead. As far as I can see from the video, he "resisted arrest" in the loosest possible sense before the officers jumped on him, and it took them barely five seconds, tops, to decide that this was only possible with a dangerous method of restraint that put the man's life at unnecessary and, ultimately, fatal risk.
At best, this smacks of poor training and awful philosophy. Regardless of whether or not I would have done the same (I wouldn't have, but then I'm a weakling and would struggle to win fights against sick flies), the police in this case failed in their basic duty and took action that was far too aggressive and resulted in a man's death. That no charges were brought is, indeed, astonishing. I would hope that at least the officer in question will be disciplined internally.

Baz, improve your knowledge
An Air choke or Tracheal choke specifically refers to a "true" choke that compresses the upper airway leading to asphyxia.
A Blood choke, carotid restraint or sleeper hold is a form of strangulation that compress one or both carotid arteries and/or the jugular veins without compressing the airway.
\\\A medical examiner said police officers killed Garner by compressing his neck and chest. His health problems, including asthma and obesity, were contributing factors.\\
Well, not a particularly in depth medical report, but enough to suggest that the force was excessive........and that is all we have to go on at this moment.
I cannot understand why he wasn't indicted.

Here is the full version on the video, notice that the neck hold was released as soon as they had the victim on the ground.

And the fact that he did not die from being strangled as some have suggested, but by being restrained on the floor.
/// City officials found Mr Garner's death was caused by "the compression of his chest and prone positioning during physical restraint by police". ///
/// Asthma and heart disease also contributed to his death, they said. ///
He also resisted arrest.

Some on here have repeatedly said in the past "Why the need to bring colour into the debate"?
