I don't know if this has already been discussed here but I think a murderer and rapist sentenced to life imprisonment should not be allowed the right to die. He should have to live with himself for the rest of his natural life and not take the easy route to escaping justice.

I don't need to view the link to say I don't agree with a death penalty anyway.
Question Author
This is not the death penalty, it is euthanasia at his own request.
The OP sounds more like Revenge than Justice.
An interesting one for the people who don't agree with the death penalty.
why not? he only costs money to keep him in prison. Dont see it is easy to decide to die rather than live or any kind of escape.
As we have no say in the matter, any discussion can only be arbitrary and serves no purpose other than to express personal views.
I agree,hc. I'd rather a criminal serve their punishment in the here and now. It will be-hopefully- a daily reminder of what they've done. I see death-whether the death penalty or this method - as wrong. Yes...it's an easy way out, particularly for those who have no fear of it.
And since when does the criminal choose the punishment?
[Zacs]... or snipe at other posters.
I think 'expressing personal views' covers that.
Think it's a good idea, sooner this man is gone from this world the better.

Cheaper option in the long run as well.
Retrofitting, but OK then.
As the saying goes "Good riddance to bad rubbish"
If it is their own wish then sure, they should be allowed to give up their life if that is their sanely considered wish. But there again it isn't available to the general public yet (ok I don't know the Belgium situation re euthanasia/suicide) so I can't see prisoners being made an exception, now.

Were it a generally available option then it would be pure vengefulness on society's part not to allow it simply because a prisoner asks for it.
Question Author
It's not revenge. The judiciary sentenced him to life imprisonment under the law and having to life with himself and what he's done is surely a great part of that sentence.
Question Author
OG, euthanasia has been legal in Belgium for 12 years or so.
Let him get on with it.
Keep him alive! If I was in his situation I would also choose death so I don't have to live with the consequences as well.
Available in Belgium on demand for anything ?
Or does one need to have a fatal illness, or be a nuisance to one's relatives, or something ?
agree with pasta

it's not revenge, it's retribution - they're different, and most models of justice demand a proportional element of retribution in the punishment
Like OG, I have never agreed with the death penalty. But in this case, if it voluntary, than I think he should be allowed to get on with it.
