This was always touted as some kind of urban myth but it seems that it is true. Waitrose aids and abets the already too high house inflation problem. So first time buyers will find it even more difficult to but a home. And they will have to pay more for their weekly shop !

Look for a home near an Lidl would seem to be the answer.

Yes, NJ....Arestel it was ! Very tasty ! This morning at 07:00, I had a glass of Bucks Fizz, made with Arestel and Lidl's Orange Juice ( with the bits in )
A wonderful way to start your day !

At Christmas, Lidl had bottles of Champagne, for only £9:99, a bargain I am sure you will agree !
Boozing at 7am Mikey? Start of the slippery slope if you ask me !! :-)
Oh Mikey I bought the last bottle of Baalbek red wine that you tipped last week when I went into Lidl ( for lidl drink of course )

and the person I gave it to was suitably grateful
// At Christmas, Lidl had bottles of Champagne, for only £9:99, a bargain I am sure you will agree !//

brisanquet ? summit like that

actually the person I gave the Baalbek to - I also followed up with 2 bots each of the Lidl champagne

and we sang the toast to Champagne from die fledermaus and then
erm sat down and drank them....( clearly more than two people present )

PP...Die Fledermaus was the second opera I ever saw, nearly 35 years ago ! Such happy memories !

( My first was "La Boheme" and yes, I did cry when Mimi died ! )

For your delight ::::

I think La Boheme is a good first opera for anyone Mikey. How many years did it take you to find Wagner?
"A good first opera"

A contradiction in terms, surely :-)

I'll stick to the Champers (or Cava or Prosecco) if it's all the same to you !!
that would be the well known German horror opera, NJ - "Die, Fledermaus!"

ladybirder....not long ! I started out with Puccini and Verdi, like most opera lovers I suppose. I still think Puccini is a genius. But I shared a flat with a German student in the mid to late 70's and he introduced me to Mahler.

From there it was but a small step to Wagner ! I have been able to see a complete Ring Cycle, and that was at Covent Garden in the late 80's. It was the famous "Time Tunnel" production from Komische Oper in Berlin. All the Wagner greats of the time were singing....John Tomlinson, Gwyneth Jones, etc.

I also saw "Siegfried" at Longborough, in the Cotswolds, which was fun....picnicking on the lawn during the dining interval ! Wonderful evening, and if you live nearby, I would recommend a visit. Its Glyndeborough on the cheap !
Mikey, we often go to Verona where performances involving huge numbers of players take place in the open air upon a vast stage in the 2000 year old Roman arena. I would highly recommend it – it is spectacular - but if you go pay for a proper seat. A spot on the ‘steps’ is not to be recommended!

Naomi....thanks for the info. Verona is on my bucket list ! I have heard that the acoustics in the amphitheatre are superb. I want to see Aida, with real elephants !

I have a video at home of Tosca at Verona, with Eva Marton. I was lucky to see her in Elektra, at Covent Garden, and she was wonderful.

A definite Can Belto !
It's fabulous - it really is. The sets for Aida, which we've seen there several times, are quite astonishing - and I've never seen so many people on stage at one time. Hundreds!
Alcoholics the lot of you!
Hic! ;o)
With all that in your past, Mikey, I'm not surprised you have to take to the bottle at 7am :-)
Question Author
Ho ho NJ !.....But I would urge you to give opera a try. Its a very broad church and there is something for everyone if you look.

Start off with "Tosca" or perhaps "La Boheme"....maybe "Madama Butterfly". You never know, you might graduate up to Wagner yet !
I don't understand opera. I only went to secondary school ;-)

So did I Tony ! There is hope for all of us 11 plus failures......persevere !

( you don't have to wear a Dicky Bow ! )
I went to a grammar school and I don't get it either! I don't think i was "my period". :-)
