In order to commit suicide first you need to be alive and the Tories have no life to speak of in Scotland. Cameron can't lose here: the more he bangs on (and he is largely correct in what he says) the more it probably currently hurts the SNPs opponents in Scotland , who are also his opponents.

The Tories lost the plot and the argument in 1997, when they were wiped out completely in Scotland. In the intervening years, they have only got one MP....hardly a record to boast about. If the Tories can't see that it's a terrible thing for the UK as a whole that neither of the two main parties will have much, if any, real support in Scotland, then they seriously need to think a bit harder about what this will mean. In the first place it makes it very difficult if not impossible for either party to have realistic hopes of a majority. In the second place even a majority in parliament will have the shroud of relative illegitimacy as two -- if not three, as Wales may well follow suit -- of the constituent countries of the UK will have elected no representatives of the actual government. There is no way this can be thought of as an ideal situation.

Cameron was on about "ten days to save the Union". His anti-SNP rhetoric will only serve to hasten its demise.

If he's not the PM then he'll go on his own. The Tories will be the largest party so there is a good chance he'll still be PM after the election. Sorry Labour luvvies this is slipping from Ed, JimmyK is driving the Labour voters away. Oddly enough even the Limp Dums are starting to look better than they did a few weeks ago.

It is clear that May and Johnson have positioned themselves as the next leader. Whether that demonstrates a wealth of talent is a matter of opinion. Cameron's replacement is more of a open debate precisely because he was seen to fail in 2010 when he failed to win the election. I don't believe if he fails to win for a second time that he will remain leader.

Ed's replacement is less clear because until he fails to win an election, he is fairly safe in his position. As to his successor, they will make themselves known when it is appropriate.

At the moment the Tory Party's only chance of a majority is if they can frighten UKIP voters into returning, grudgingly, to the fold. What a sorry state of affairs that would be if so. I'd love to see the electorate stick two fingers up to the main parties in England (it's already happening in Scotland). Maybe then they'll wake up and see what a failure they are in the eyes of the people.

Incidentally, in light of TTT's post at 10:17, it seems that Cameron isn't trying to commit suicide so much as trying to pull Labour down with him.
