It's just I don't recall ever seeing an anti-drinking thread on here whereas we have anti-smoking all the time. I think drinking can have worse effects.
I'm going for a smoke now which is disgusting and filthy and will kill anyone withing 20 yards of me. You (MT) will say you were too bladdered to log on and some us find it cool and attractive. Just odd isn't it.

I am still unsure about these silly e-cigarette things.
They do appear to be encouraging to give up real cigarettes, which has to be a good thing, although I also think that they have made "smoking" respectable again. People also look silly, walking down the road with a large plastic thing sticking out of the mouths.
I am also still unsure why these things are available in bubblegum flavour, if it isn't meant to attract children.
But if I were to get off the fence, and be forced to make a decision, than I suppose I would be in favour of extending the ban on smoking in public places to these things.

vetuste_ennemi...with the greatest of respect....drivel. I should look up the meaning of the word "Fascism" if I were you. You are totally wrong about smoking not harming other people. Evidence of the effect of second-hand smoke is now well established.
The law on smoking in public places was designed so that the majority of people in Britain, who don't smoke, are protected from the effects of second-hand smoke, from the minority of people who still do smoke. In Wales, for instance, only about 20% of adults now still smoke. I have no reason to think that similar decreasing rates of smoking are not present in the rest of the UK.
Now we all can go to Pubs, cafes, and restaurants without that awful reek of stale cigarette smoke, and over-flowing ashtrays full of dog ends.
The legislation is hugely popular in Britain and is already showing health benefits.
There was considerable public debate and discussion about the new law, before it was enacted. Non-smokers won the debate and smokers lost...an example of democracy working in Britain.
You lost the argument....get used to it !

I was referring SOLELY to the ban on e-fags, Mikey, not on the real things. I apologise for not having made that plain.
Separate point on democracy and its interpretation. Majorities can be just as fascist as minorities, oligarchies or dictators, IF they use their numerical superiority to oppress minorities. A decent country needs more than universal franchise; it requires a respect for freedom and liberty. That is why the Founding Fathers drafted the Constitution.

vetuste_ennem....apology accepted ! I thought that you were making a more general point about smoking in general.
I have already indicated that I don't really hold strong ideas about the use of e-cigarettes. I am not sure that enough research has been done, in the very short time that they have been available. It doesn't appear that there is anything like the risk to others in their use, compared with real cigarettes.
But cigarettes have been around for over 100 years, and it was comparatively recently that the tobacco lobby was still denying that there was any link to smoking and health.
Indeed, there are some people around that still won't accept the universally held view by the scientific and health, that smoking is bad for you. But these, I will admit, are a very small minority these days.
Lets not forget why e-cigarettes were invented by the smoking industry in the first place. It was the universal success of the law on smoking in public places. If people were still allowed to smoke in enclosed public spaces, we would never see these plastic things in sale. The tobacco companies have to make a profit somewhere.
I am still concerned though about the availability of flavours primarily designed to attract children. I see kids smoking these things on the way home from school in increasing numbers these days.
On a related subject, it looks as if Wales is going to ban smoking in cars, where children are present. I'm afraid that smoking is indeed on the run.
