If he was trying to joke, it didn't work. Doesn't seem like he was trying to be funny, either, since he later confirmed that he meant what he'd said.

In any case it's all totally self-defeating. His point, such as it was, was that anything that distracts from the science is unhelpful. But a row over whether or not he's sexist (and, by extension, plenty of other scientists are also) is exactly the distraction he wants to avoid.
