I think it was more thoughtlessness than a deliberate attempt to offend, or ignore cultural attitudes.
Being told to 'respect the mountain' to most Westerners would be interpreted as not dropping litter, or playing loud music, but I honestly think they would not think they were being disrespectful by their actions, assuming there were no indigenous people within sight.
A valuable lesson learned - hopefully!
