gness - //...and as they were asked, before the climb, to respect the beliefs of the local people and to respect the mountain does it not appear that they acted with deliberate arrogance? //
I think it was more thoughtlessness than a deliberate attempt to offend, or ignore cultural attitudes.
Being told to 'respect the mountain' to most Westerners would be interpreted as not dropping litter, or playing loud music, but I honestly think they would not think they were being disrespectful by their actions, assuming there were no indigenous people within sight.
A valuable lesson learned - hopefully!

Just because other nations' religious observations seem odd to us is no reason to ignore or dismiss them - heaven knows there is enough hoo-hah when any foreigner is perceived as doing the same to ours - even though we are nowhere near as devout in our beliefs as many others.

Perhaps they really dont want to attract that sort. Can you imagine it - Stick it on Facebook or whatever and suddenly your mountain and local towns are swamped by drunk naked people cavorting everywhere.
Maybe they simply dont want to be the next Shagaluf now the Balerics are clamping dow?
