How cool is this guy ...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex-33741380

Every year, he takes part in the Pride Parade ... on his mobility scooter !!

He carries a banner saying " I'm the oldest gay in the village".

In the past, he has been given a criminal conviction for being gay. This weekend, he married his BF, to coincide with Pride Weekend.

That's the way to go when you're in your 90s!

gness - remember you have been moved up the queue ... don't make me come down there!
andy -part of being an educated adult is knowing when to walk away. Its easy to spot when someone is more intent on trying to wind up than sensible debate -one chooses to either carry on with the wind up or leave the thread. That is unless one has 'issues' with the poster, then it becomes personal.
Ahh......I will keep that in mind, Andy......Ooooo the excitement is almost too much.....will go and lie in my hammock......♥

Mind you....the thought of making you come down here...... ;-)
Nice to see you in such a good mood gness -you seem elated -even blissful. Something must have made your day, and its not even lunch time!
if I come which will be my Beatrice guiding me through the labyrinthian Lanes?
We shall take an arm each, Sandy....and you'll experience country bliss in the city.....♥
divebuddy - //This business of mixing up homosexuals and paedophiles. Is it really such an outrageous thing for some people to do.//

Absolutely it is! This casual "Well, they are more or less the same thing ..." attitude is utterly abhorrent, and should be challenged at each and every opportunity. If you liked a drink, would you like to be routinely thought of as a wife-beater? Why not, drunken men beat their wives, so it's more or less the same thing ....

It's lazy bigoted thoughtless and utterly wrong for people to hold these perceptions, and the only way to stop them being lazily handed down is to challenge people's attitudes - that way likes progress.

//For instance, was Cyril Smith a homosexual who liked boys or a paedophile who preferred boys. // Are you trying to infer that there is a hair to be split here? If anyone 'likes', as in abuses children, then he or she is a paedophile - surely that's not a hard concept to grasp is it?

//I'm sure all you right on folk are clear about it, but I for one can see why some people aren't. //

It's nothing to do with being 'right on', it's about adopting mature attitudes to society and its structures, and making sure that casual ignorance is not allowed to carry on unchallenged.

//Oh, don't bother telling me that either way he was a paedophile, that is self evident. //

Is it? How exactly? As far as I am aware, there are accusations, but no proof to date. Making an assumption like that is exactly the kind of lazy thinking which has to be challenged.
If we accept that 2/3/4% of men are homosexual, the percentage of male paedophiles who are interested in boys far exceeds that.(I'm sure we'd all agree)
So you can see how some of us simple souls conflate the two, can't you?

No.

Trying to pass yourself off as less intelligent than you are in order to excuse lazy thinking doesn't really make it alright.
divebuddy - //Andy, Jeez, you do go on some.//

And I make no apology for it, or intend stopping anytime soon.

// Regarding Cyril being a paedo, you say that.....

Really.//

Yes, really!!
I'm not saying it's right or factually correct. It's just that an awful lot of paedophiles seem drawn to boys. Hence the 'mix up', if you like. The connection perhaps is what I'm searching for.
And an awful lot of paedophiles are attracted to girls...and some like both!

divebuddy - //Andy, Let me get this straight. You are saying that because the case against Cyril has not been proved, it is lazy thinking to say he was a paedophile.//

It's not just lazy - if he were alive it would be libellous.

The cornerstone of the British justice system is the concept of 'innocent until proven guilty' - and if you were charged of a crime, any crime, you would appreciate that it applies to you.

The fact is, however repellent the rumours may be, they remain just that - rumours, and apportioning guilt without proof is not a good way to go.
When I/we were little, booed at Indians when they appeared in our cowboy films. (and women) We never thought of perverts bothering girls(or anybody bothering with them) But we were given a, sort of, rudimentary sex education by our slightly older peers. Along the lines of, ' That blokes a homo. If he asks you to get something from the shop, don't go in his house when you come back' or 'Don't go for a pee in that bus station. It's full of homos and you know what'll happen if they catch you?' 'Gulp' we'd say, 'Yeah'. Though of course we didn't.
It's not easy when you've thought that way all your life to, like, click your fingers and 'celebrate' all things gay.
Svejk - //I'm not saying it's right or factually correct. It's just that an awful lot of paedophiles seem drawn to boys. Hence the 'mix up', if you like. The connection perhaps is what I'm searching for.//

And I repeat my earlier analogy - a lot of men who beat their wives and partners do so when drunk, but that doesn't make every drinker a wife-beater - yet strangely enough, society doesn't seem to have a problem avoiding that comparison does it?

It's a simple as this - the media, prurient, nasty, laughing-behind-its-hand and sexually prepressed as it is - is run by men.

A lot of men have an inbuilt fear of homosexuality - and this is reflected in their attitudes - which range from stupid jokes to physical violence.

Therefore, the media loves to feed this communal reassurance among the male population that they don't really like gays, but they tolerate them, but a little casual alignment with other adverse behaviour is perfectly OK.

Except it's not.
I can't see why folk are still thinking some of us want to change minds and opinions...

We don't......but we don't have to accept the way this thread was turned and the reason for it.
