My whole issue with Ratter's post (and not Ratter, despite AOG's attempts to make this personal) - is that it is based on information he does not possess - namely the religious affiliations of the man concerned.

He may well be a Muslim - but equally, he may not, so to denigrate an entire faith on the basis of the actions of one misguided individual is fundamentally wrong, and I questioned it accordingly.

It is not a fact - at least not on the basis of Sandy's link which is what we are all referring to as our source of information.

I suspect that this father is Muslim for the simple reason that if he wasn’t I don’t believe the authorities would have had any hesitation in disclosing his reasons for allowing his daughter to die. Bad publicity for Islam isn’t an attractive prospect in a city like Dubai.

I don't know how any parent could let their daughter die. He put his beliefs before the life of his child. He did what I expect he was brought up to believe in. He has to live with that for the rest of his life.

Do I think he was right? No I don't, a child's life should always be a priority.

If his belief is that strong that he would let his daughter drown rather than some stranger touch her, why did he let her go swimming in public in the first place. Was she fully covered..? It Just doesn't sound right

In order to say that we can't suggest he was Muslim because of ambiguity about the possible religions in that region (they have a lot of immigrants building their skyscrapers, as they're all too rich to want to get their hands dirty), I feel it os only fair to let you expand on that ambiguity.

Sikhism has already been mentioned. Three more shouldn't be hard to find, for the subcontinent region.
