people photographing themselves while pulling the pin of a hand grenade? That isn't death by selfie, it's death by stupidity. All the camera does is give you the chance to record your stupidity for generations to come.

Speaking as someone who has only ever taken one photograph with a mobile phone - and that was of a piece of art work to illustrate the frame for a picture framer - I have never understood the fascination with constant mobile phone photography - much less the ubiquitous 'selfie'.

I have never willingly had my photograph taken in my life - so the notion of constantly photographing myself and putting the results on the internet appeals about as much as root canal surgery without anaesthetic!

That said, I do find the notion interesting - and the link between excessive self-aggrandisement in this way, and narcissism / psychopathy is very interesting.

I wonder if Ted Bundy - a very photogenic person - would have entered the selfie boom if the technology had been available when he was alive?
I suppose it is the modern equivalent of writing a post card.
