/// and I can't really add anything fresh I'm afraid ! ///

Well at least that is true.
What are my thoughts on discrimination against whites?

i think these proposals will go some way to addressing that.

Don't you?

If the candidates race and gender is taken out of the equation, then only their qualifications and suitability for the role will be the determining factor (and how they present themselves in interviews).

So - do you support this levelling of the playing field?
That wasn't the question, sp (and you know it wasn't)
-Talbot-

You raised a couple of questions.

You know the Asian restaurants you've visited...how many non-Asians have applied for jobs there?

And how many people work there are there because they are family? Does the restaurant even advertise for jobs?

Would they need to if it were a family run concern?

Do you see the diffence between a large company who advertises jobs, and a small family restaurant who may need waiters, so rather than go through the rigmarole of creating a job description, paying a newspaper to print it and then interview, will simply contact members of the extended family?

Is this what you would do if you owned a small restaurant?

It's what I would do.
And still you haven't answered my question.
The other question you raised -Talbot- (and my post at 10:16 was not a response to you) is the general discrimination against white people.

I'm sure this happens, and this is why these proposals make sense.

AOG has said that some may not want to hire black or Asian staff because they could potentially cause trouble down the line.

This is something that fortunately I've never had to deal with, because I've been lucky to only encounter HR people who don't hold sweeping generalisations about people based on race.

I'm sure there are such people - but luckily once you start working for larger organisations, individual prejudices tends to get excluded by specifics of the candidate selection and interview process.

For instance, one person in the process might have certain prejudices, but in all jobs I have been for - there are multiple interviews with different people and everything is documented and has to be justifiable.

//You know the Asian restaurants you've visited...how many non-Asians have applied for jobs there? //

That was exactly my point about the proportions of ethnicities in the applicant pool, as opposed to the UK as a whole. An acknowledgement that I said this first would have been nice.

//And how many people work there are there because they are family? Does the restaurant even advertise for jobs? //

Don't we have anti-nepotism laws though? Are all employers not obliged to advertise?

//Would they need to if it were a family run concern?//

There are SMEs all over the shop. I haven't got a hope of getting hired at this rate.

Thank you, I also agree with the proposal. I find it incredulous that anyone can believe it doesn't happen.
No...there are no laws which preclude small businesses from employing family members.
Well known publishing firm once based solely in Dundee always asked for details of schools attended. If you went to an RC school then you didn't even get an interview. Changed days now.
@sp

On a small scale, isn't that what racism really is though? Shutting out non-family?

No...that's not what racism is.
-Talbot-

So the good news here is that we agree that prejudice not only exists within the hiring process, but these proposals are a way forward in tackling them.

How about you AOG?

Any positive feelings towards these proposals?

Got my fingers crossed here.
How about I reword it: looking after number one, then other family members, to assure their future and their kids futures, before ever giving a similar helping hand to (unrelated) strangers?

(By which I include white vs. white discrimination, and similar).

To answer your questions, sp.

I don't know how many non Asians have applied for jobs but I do know non Asians who have applied. The recieved a polit thank but no thanks.

Talbot
I know the restaurants history and it is no longer a family affair (too big)
It is actually a chain of restaurants. If I fancy going to the Indian restaurant I ask the wife or mates if they fancy going out for a Pakistan because that is what it is a Pakistan restaurant (although they now advertise as
Indian restaurant - Pakistan restaurant
Hyponosis

I think that's exactly what I would do if I owned a small business! And wouldn't would you too?

Say if you ran a small restaurant in Cleethorpes (first place that came to mind) - if you needed a waiter, and your 18 year old neice needed a summer job, would you say to him/her - I'm going to advertise it in the Cleethorpes Echo and you will have to take your chances with everyone else?

Don't know about you, but I would offer the job to my neice first.

I think that most people would be the same.

What would you do in that situation?

And do you think that it works the other way around? Say a small family run business run by a white family are demonstrating racism if they employ someone from their immediate family?

It sounds like a stretch to me.

A real stretch.
-Talbot-

I'm understand the first part of your post, but the second is a mystery that only the Scooby Doo gang would have any chance of solving.
I see nothing wrong with it, what part are you struggling with?
Everyone I know call it an Idian restaurant, when it opened everyone who worked there was of Pakistani heritage.
With all these quotas and positive discrimination and whatnot, there won't be enough black people to go around.
We'll have to start importing them. ;)
