I hope some managers/auditors have also been punished. I hope I'm wrong but I'm wondering whether there is a culture of not wanting to be seen to be doing close audits on staff in some areas because of fears of claims of victimisation/discrimination.

What kind of systems do councils have in place when some-one
can be in this position within a few months.
She stole nearly £500,000, does not have to pay it back, and will be out of jail in under 2 years! yet they say '' crime does not pay?''

are you seriously suggesting the country is full of council workers stealing hundreds of thousands from their offices?
shame we cant kick every last one of them out and back to where they came from..
No jno- the vast majority of council staff are very hard working and honest and most councils have robust auditing/management control systems in place but clearly the systems in Haringey were not adequate

Didn't suggest anything, jno.
Best not mention that all the names seem to be Moslem ones
I thought her name sounded East European or Turkish . The husband's name Jihad gives a clue though. I suppose most of her friends and family would be from the same heritage- maybe a white English born person thief would have shared the proceeds with people of a similar white English back ground.
what's "the tip of the iceberg" mean, then?

Sorry, f-f, my previous post and this one are intended for Svejk.

We can't get the money back, Eddie, because she spent it all. And yet part of the loot was used to pay off their mortgage.
I see a cunning plan to get our money back. After all, they won't need a house in this country when they get out, will they?

It's what we call a question, jno, not a statement. If I had more time I'd explain it to you.
Sevjk see my reply to Ummmm on this related question.

And don't try to get others on ' your side'. It's pathetic.
There are bad eggs everywhere.

The fact that such a large sum was misappropriated would imply that the system, at least in that council, are broken.
Little wonder why some employers are reluctant to employ anyone with a foreign sounding name.

That is not including councils of course, where having a foreign sounding name is almost obligatory.
I'm not sure about that, AOG. Have you been to Haringey?
I think the council staff in Haringey, similar boroughs and in fact most councils around the UK broadly reflect the diversity of the population in those areas.
The house should be sold off, so as to recuperate the money, the council tax payers of Haringey council, should demand it.
fiction-factor

That is what I was referring to in my 2nd paragraph.
