I hope some managers/auditors have also been punished. I hope I'm wrong but I'm wondering whether there is a culture of not wanting to be seen to be doing close audits on staff in some areas because of fears of claims of victimisation/discrimination.

>The house should be sold off, so as to recuperate the money, the council tax payers of Haringey council, should demand it.

It would be good if that could be done but I think reasons have already been given as to why it won't be done if the payments were made by friends and family and not directly with the stolen money.
AOG as I said ( look at my reply at 21.12 yesterday) the house can only be seized if the court can PROVE that the cash used to pay off the mortgage was from the proceeds of crime. I think this person was bright enough to make sure no proof was available, they probably gave money to relatives who then paid off the mortgage for them. The judge actually said '' I understand the money has been spent so there is nothing to repay''
// are you seriously suggesting the country is full of council workers stealing hundreds of thousands from their offices? //

happens

after Dr Shipman the GMC suggested exactly that ( erm that the medical profession was full of mass murderers ) and lots and lots of your tax pounds were spent showing there was not

What about the Proceeds of Crime Act?

Granted, you can't repossess a wedding ceremony but that is why it will have to be "goods to the value of".

It's not the Council Tax payers' fault that they paid over the odds for it, merely because they could… with their ill-gotten gains.

Justice, please.

Oh and the guests and bystanders whom it did not occur to them to ask "how on earth can you afford all this; you only work at the council?" should think themselves lucky not to be collared for being accessories.

She has stolen nearly £500,000 of council tax payers money, if they can't get their money back by selling the house, why can't they put a repayment order on her?

After all students have to repay their Government loans off, so why can't she?
After serving 3 & 1/2 years for theft what are her chances of getting a job that pays enough to make repayments at a reasonable rate?
There was a similar case a few years back the person was ordered to pay back £1 a week from their benefits.
This subject is what prompted me to post my 'Crime does not pay ?' question. I think that in many cases it does pay, possibly we can continue this discussion there?
