Lord Lucan was officially confirmed dead today, and his son can now hold the title. As there is doubt as to Lucans innocense of his Nannys murder and wifes attempted murder, should the title die with him. Why should someone benefit from the title of a discredited peer. Opinions?

And that would have been fine.....I mean I still would have disagreed....its bringing in Lord Lucan as an argument....

get rid of them all - i don't care what party they come from, as far as i am aware there are mory labour peers in the upper house anyway

I think your earlier comment that never having been to a public school excuses your poor grammar is an insult to the rest of us who didn't go to public school either but still write reasonably well and may be the reason that so many have been critical of your prose.

i'm fine if you disagree, i asked for opinions whether people agreed or not.... then you get onto the spelling, my political allegiance and whatever.... Reasonable counter-opinions are OK with me.

Why read more into it than there is Zebo, turning my response round to say that it insults those who didn't go to a public school, is really desperate
If you don't feel your education to be an issue, why drag it in?

You don't have to be a good speller to get your point across, everyone knew perfectly well what i was saying. Rather than stick to answering the question some thought it would be "rather fun" to pick up on the fact it wasn't written the way they would write it. Well good for you. Stick to the subject.
barney I am the oldest of 13 children, brought up on a huge council estate, you can no doubt see where from. I do not, and never have, let my background influence my outlook or my spelling. It did get me streetwise early though.
As the son didn't commit the murder I don't see why the title should be affected. On the other hand I see no reason why such titles should ever be passed on generation after generation anyway. An anachronism in any modern civilised society.
Looks like you have not been accepted by Answerbanks elite, barney. Never mind old boy better luck next time!
If a Lordship ceased to exist if a holder 'bought the title into disrepute ' there would be very few if any left. Can't say I agree with it but that's the way it is.
Barney....I haven't time to read all the relies on this post but I am unsure why you say that the title should have died ?

Titles are always handed after someones death....why should Lucan be any different.

If there is an issue here, it is why it has taken so long !

But if you are making a case for the complete abolition of all hereditary titles.........well, I am with you there !

And not one post removed, how very strange.

Where is a certain person when one needs him?
I'm surprised the sone wanted to take the title. Poison challice!
You whinge on about other people straying from the question, but your original question was about benefitting from the title of a discredited peer, yet now you're ranting on about the whole peerage system being abolished (which would obviate the original issue anyway). Physician heal thyself.

/// it has not been proved that he didn't murder his nanny or attempt to kill his wife. ///

Nor has it been proved that he did.

He was never arrested, he was never charged, never put on trial and never found guilty.
I believe the Law states 'Innocent until proven Guilty'
Just another cheap shot from the Left.
He can call himself George Bingham 8th Earl Of Lucan or Baron Bingham or George Bingham Baronet of Nova Scotia

Its his hereditary title. If Individuals had to rescind their Title following crimes of their fathers their would be no Royal Family.
I too disagree with hereditary titles, but I am not sure what Lord Lucans misdemeanors have to do with it?

///Lord Lucan was officially confirmed dead today/// No he wasn't!

///Lord Lucan is now presumed to be dead, a High Court judge has ruled.///
///He was declared dead in 1999, despite dozens of unverified sightings, but the new ruling gives his son the right to inherit the family title.///

He cannot be 'officially declared dead' as a body has never been found.
