Unfortunate. Sad. But hardly surprising. Allow mass migration into your country and citizens will become demoralised and increasingly angry at what is being imposed on them. At some point a catastrophic reaction will occur somewhere. It's the government's job to avoid this sort of situation, not ensure it.

Mikey > It seems to me that some Germans at least, have learned nothing from its history.
And many millions around Europe have learnt from history and are rightly concerned about the volume of migrants, especially in Germany, that have been approved to stay without any serious understanding of issues of integration or any coherent policy whatsoever.

Mikey > .most of these in Germany at the moment were invited in to stay by Frau Merkel
Government's decision yes and not the population. True democracy at work. Merkel has the temerity to talk about sanctions on other European countries, she has left some of those chips she was seen eating on her shoulder....

Mikey, //Racial hatred in its purest form.//
And you know that how? Does it never occur to you that people are genuinely concerned about the impact that vast numbers of immigrants, especially those who embrace and are determined to cling to an entirely alien culture, will have on their country and on their communities? You say “then it was the Jews”, but if some of these newcomers have their way, next it will be not only the indigenous population, but also those immigrants who do want to integrate.

Why does that^ not concern you? I can’t see you banging tables and talking about Kristallnacht on that thread – or do you think that only the Germans are capable of committing such horrors?

jack - //The Governments may well have 'brought it on themselves'. However, Governments are nebulous things and can change according to the whims of the electorate.
Unfortunately, the problems they create have to be dealt with on a daily basis by the very people they purport to represent. //
If there is one thing that is guaranteed to turn me from a mild-mannered patient soul into a raving shouting shouty person is lack of accountability.
It occurs from governments down - decisions are made, and by the time they come to fruition, often with massive life-changing consequences for millions of people, the originators have simply tefloned away into other roles, usually with eight-figure salaries, or comfortable retirement, but always without fail, a complete absence of accountability.
Hessletine - mines closed
Blair - wars (various)
Cameron - Europe (jury currently debating)
Bush - wars (various)
Thatcher - sell-off of social housing /utilities / others too numerous ...
and the list goes on.
If any of these people seriously thought that they would one day be made accountable for the decisions they made, and the effects they had, it would concentrate their minds to the required levels, and some of the most rash choices (invasion of Iraq Mr Blair?) would simply never have taken place.
Mrs Merkel is doubtless lining up a number of directorships as the end of her political career lurches ever closer, as the migrant crisis she has designed drags her country into turmoil.

I think your ire might be misdirected - by te time Mr Heseltine announced the closure of 31/50 remaining pits in 1991, the coal industry in the UK was already a spent force. When set against the size of the workforce in 1945 (800,000), the figure of 31,000 affected by the 1991 closures seems almost irrelevant.
