I wouldn't know Togo. Is it relevant to whether a prisoner has a right to lodge a claim where appropriate ? As mentioned, trivial/frivolous claims should be identified and rejected. Legitimate claims may go up or down in number depending on how well the system works.
Oh I understood it perfectly well Corbyloon. My query concerns the motive.
Unlike most on here I have worked inside a prison education department. What nalit says is true. At least 30% of prison inmates are suffering from mental health problems like the lad nalit mentioned, they should not be in jail at all. Many are virtually illiterate and unemployable which is a major factor in why they offended.
I know several prison officers , they feel very let down by people who have views like those expressed on here , that all prisoners are ' worthless scum' . That those who's job it is to look after them are very little better than the 'scum' they should lock up and forget.
The prison service suffers from very low moral of it's staff, who are forced to work long hours with compulsory overtime. Long booked leave is cancelled at a few hours notice. I know officers who have lost money on booked holidays and flights because their leave was cancelled at the last minute.
A summer week end of compulsory overtime can replaced by a mid week day off in November for example. Their contract of service does not allow them to refuse the extra work and they are forbidden by law to strike. The service is losing staff faster than they can be replaced and the work load of those who remain gets harder by the day.
Are you perhaps prepared to hazard a guess then Geezer, without smudging the lines, do you think claims are up or down and do you believe that the people in the 'Prison Service' are more vindictive and judgemental than once was the case.
//I know officers who have lost money on booked holidays and flights because their leave was cancelled at the last minute.//

Were these officers not allowed to claim Eddie. The inmates appear to claim for all and sundry. Which of course is where we came in.

I think the number is much higher, something like 70% if I remember rightly. I was once locked up in Walton prison for a week with a guy who scared the sh** out of me. He was convinced that he was hearing messages from the DJ's on the radio. I didnt sleep for a week until I was moved to a working wing. This guy had NO medication or medical help. Just locked up.
Nobody ever got sent to prison for being illiterate or 'slow'.
Stop insulting our intelligence.
//Nobody ever got sent to prison for being illiterate or 'slow'.//
Of course they dont, but people that are illiterate or slow get sent to prison when they shouldnt have been.
Do you honestly believe that the lad i mentioned in my previous post who rang the fire brigade because he wanted to see a fire engine should have recieved a custodial sentance?
This is the 'Prisoners Newspaper' it is actually a very 'Good Read' if you want to know a bit about life in a real jail. However my point is the number of adverts from prison lawyers who work on a no win no fee basis, and run all the compensation claims so that they collect a nice fat fee for winning a case.

Copies of 'Inside Time' are distributed free to all jails in the UK.
I thought it was really hard to get to prison -people complain that joy riders and petty criminals , enen burglars get a 'slap on the wrist' yet you (nailit) say mentally ill people get put in the nick -I don't believe it - a person without previous who had called the fire service 'to see a fire engine' would be referred to social services not put in prison.
Eddie my posts at 19:22 and 19:52 were of course alluding to that fact.
Svejk People who are illiterate or 'slow' get sent to jail because they do not know how to fight a case or how to contact a solicitor. They can't read court documents or summons so they fail to attend court and often the first they know of a jail sentence is when the police turn up to arrest them. I KNOW this! I have been there, talking to them and trying to teach them to read and write.
I have had 'hard' men cry, when for the first time in their lives someone is trying to help them rather than lock them up. Of course in the view of a few on here that makes me 'worthless scum' as well as those I tried to help!
Retrochic,
Believe it not but ive been there and seen it.
To be fair, I wouldnt have believed it myself unless I'd have been banged up with him.
People don't get locked up because they are 'slow' -they get locked up because they have committed a serious crime!

// .whoooosh ...you just dont get it do you...still not home obviously...never mind..// az

no Baz YOU dont get it. Prison is not a free for all - and if it is you get places like Guantanamo - they have rules like all of us do
even you Baz

and one of the rules is that they have to obey the body of law that governs them just as you do Baz

and if they break the rules the compensation ( = moolah, monkey ) may be paid just happens if you might sue someone
Nah Tony, this was 1998 and he got 12 months (i think)
Togo , No they are not allowed to claim , again the contract of employment does not allow it.
// People don't get locked up because they are 'slow' -they get locked up because they have committed a serious crime!//

no retrochic they get locked up if they are slow
I think 50% cant read or write - that would be a greater percentage than in your street....and if you empty the psych hospitals you fill the prisons ( assocation noted by Esquirel 1850)

... serious crime.... o my lord
