Retro, weve had run inns before, I really dont want any more. But NO, people dont get locked up for committing serious crimes. people get locked up for non payment of fines (as per my previous post) and other non serious crimes. If your only source of info is the media then I can understand why you think as you do but Ive been there and seen the other side. Some magistrates are just 'jail happy'

Retrochic, people do get locked up because they are 'thick' or 'slow' they can get duped into helping with a crime without realising what they are doing. Then of course the 'masterminds' drop the slow/thick ones 'in the soup' to face the consequences and save their own skins! Again I have been there, seen it and talked to them!

^^ A typical case was a guy who was asked to 'look after' some goods for a 'mate' who told him he didn't want to leave it in his his house while he was on holiday. Of course it turned out to be stolen goods and the mate denied all knowledge of it when the police found it!
Yes , I know it sounds absurd to the likes of you and I ,but there are people that stupid they think they are doing a favour to a mate.

retro, then I refer you to my previous post to another ABer
//Do you honestly believe that the lad i mentioned in my previous post who rang the fire brigade because he wanted to see a fire engine should have recieved a custodial sentance?//
Chance what you think, people with issues DO get sent to prison.
You (and many others...dont take it personally) seem to think that mental health issues are dealt with in the community, they arnt. people get sent to prison when they should be dealt with in the community. And while we are at it, many magistrates are middle class business people with next to no experience of dealing with people with mental health issues.

Baldric How do you view another case I knew of?
A guy was asked by a long time friend to do him a favour. Drive a van to a destination 100 miles away.He told him it was a very urgent delivery, the driver was ill and there was no one else to deliver it. He was told he would be paid £200 cash to do the delivery as a favour. He was stopped by the police and there was £20,000 worth of 'dope' hidden in with the other goods. Of course the friend denied all knowledge of it and left his mate to face jail. Would you do a job like that? and if you did would you search the van for contraband before you did it?

//There is of course more bullying and victimisation carried out by the prisoners.//
My experience is that prison officers are bigger thugs than anyone they are paid to lock up.
That should please the likes of Retrochic who has an idealistic view of life that anyone who has a mental illness is not in prison.

^^ He had known this guy for years and had no idea he was a dealer !
He though he was doing a friend a favour and earning a nice bit of cash.
Suppose then that the guy was employed as a driver and the employer hid drugs in with a normal load , then denied all knowledge when the driver was stopped with the drugs on board ? Same answer? Is a driver supposed to search every load he picks up in case someone has put drugs in with it?

LOOK, Im going bed soon and you can debate or believe/disbelieve all you want to. But the most violence that Ive seen has been in prison and has been perpatrated by screws.
Ive been there, most of you havnt.
Give some people a uniform and they go nuts.
Retro, believe what you want, Ive been in prison with backward people.
Ive seen people get kicked for attempting suicide.
ignorance is bliss eh?
