Strange, since it's their policies that have made this man so popular.
In Thirties Germany, Hitler "went down well" and "livened up the race" no end!
I wonder how many of Trump's present supporters will - like Hitler's - be denying they ever had anything to do with the man in later years.
Apparently he spends quite a bit of time there and I believe he is a property owner.

Yes, YMB, Bang on, the rise of Trump is entirely attributable to the activities of the self proclaimed "liberal correct thinkers".
Nonsense. Trump hasn't even had to face anyone from the "left", yet. All his victories so far have been against the excesses of the right. Fox News. Ted Cruz. Jeb Bush. Mitt Romney. Giants of the right-wing of US politics. Trump has taken on all of them, and destroyed more than a few.

Nothing to do with the left at all. You're kidding yourself if you think Trump is only a danger to that side of the argument. Right now, the party he is doing the most damage to is the Republican one. Presumably the turn of the Democrats to face the Trumpernaut is coming soon. But then, if you think Hilary Clinton is "left-wing" you would show yourself to understand neither her politics nor those of the left.
Maybe not the left, the status quo might be a better term. 'Populist' politicians are doing well everywhere.

ordinary people have seen enough jim. That's what happens when you ignore and down tread your own people on the alter of PC cobblers. That's what happens when you favour foreigners over your own people. Our own trump is no doubt among us waiting for the opportunity.
Do you mean Boris, TTT?
I'm not saying Trump doesn't represent legitimate anger. It's frustratingly misdirected -- Trump, at best, has offered to stick two fingers up to the major American politicians, rather than anything of substance. He taps into anger, not reason. He provides no solutions whatsoever.

The problem right now, though, is that some on the right are washing their hands of all responsibility for this. They are wrong. I'll not repeat my post in sp's thread verbatim, but the fact is that the right of US politics has messed up badly in the last few years. They have held the balance of power, and abused it massively. The vacuum left behind by this was filled by Trump. Make no mistake, it is from the right that he has entered the fray, and it is the rest of the right that he is slowly destroying. Look to your own (or, rather, America's right's own) mess before blaming the left.

well whatever jim, extremists rise when the public are angry and they are very angry now, all over US and EU.

yeah by post no2 this time khandro! must be a record.
Fascinating piece on BBC4 last night, a documentary on James Randi, psychology and magic. In his long career as a magician and debunker, Randi exposed fraudsters like Peter Popoff:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Popoff#Investigation_by_James_Randi

An interesting line in the program was that, even when people know they are being lied to, the prefer to believe the lie rather than the truth. Hence the resurgence of Peter Popoff even after he had been shown as a despicable con artist who took money off people and told them they were cured of all sorts of illnesses.

While watching, the parallels with the current American politics were apparent. People will willingly listen to and vote for "We're going to build a wall", "We're going to keep the Muslims out", "We're going to make America great again" and they may even know these things are untrue or unlikely - but they'll vote for it anyway, because it's want they want to hear.
Jim it has nothing to do with Trump and the left.

Why cant you see that pounding the general public with right-on policies eventually will cause an uprising?

If the Liberal left did not continually bash us with their right-on policies then Trump & co would not have any anger to tap into. Therefore the liberal left are 100% to blame for his rise.
That assignment of blame makes no sense at all. Not least because, well, what right-on policies are you talking about? Here in the UK, maybe, but apart from universal healthcare coverage (and even the Tories are on board about that these days) -- and I suppose gay marriage, but that was a court decision rather than Obama's -- there's been essentially nothing that's particularly leftist coming out of mainstream American politics for decades.

You are blaming entirely the wrong thing, ymb. Trump's rise is because of the failure of the right in the US to stand for anything other than their hatred of Obama. Nothing more, nothing less.
Jim; //Trump's rise is because of the failure of the right in the US to stand for anything other than their hatred of Obama. Nothing more, nothing less.//

Might it have something to do with what he says too?
> there's been essentially nothing that's particularly leftist coming out of mainstream American politics for decades.

You're looking at what they have done, rather than what they haven't.

* They haven't built a wall along the Mexican border
* They haven't banned all Muslims from entering the country
* They haven't made America great again
* etc.

These "failures" make them leftist ...
Khandro, I know all about Godwin's Law but, just because someone creates what has been named as a "law", does not mean one should avoid perfectly valid historic comparisons. Consider the situations...
a. Country is vaguely discombobulated about its situation
b. Right-wing nut-job appears and starts shouting the odds
c. He promises to make the country great again in every which way
d. He finds a couple of easy - but quite unjustified - scapegoats to blame for all ills
e. His rhetoric becomes increasingly violent and then physically threatening
…and so forth.

Faced with just the information contained in (a) to (e) above, could you tell which country, person or time I was referring to?
I stand by the comparison, Godwin or no Godwin!
Come on Trump ...... !
Perhaps, Viv, you should have written "Come on, Trump!" The comma after the word, 'on', makes a vast difference to the meaning of the sentence. Without it, it can only mean something rather vulgar!
