A letter to parents of school starters is shoving nothing into any child's head.
To parents ''What is the orientation of your child ?'' Answer ''Human''.
Mamyalynne, the very idea that this is being made an issue concerns some parents - and I don't think they deserve ridicule for caring... but carry on if you like.
Ok,I give in - I am browbeaten - I apologise to everyone who feel ridiculed by my remark.

If any parent feels aggrieved they should complain in whatever way they see fit.
A letter to parents to encourage discussion with their child if they consider it appropriate is hardly making an issue.

chelle, I think it is. It's an issue that hasn't been deemed necessary to make enquiries about in the past.
I don't see how Mamya has ridiculed anyone.
"It's an issue that hasn't been deemed necessary to make enquiries about in the past."

Yeah... I'm not sure that's a reason for objecting to raising it now. The past wasn't always a very welcoming place.
Cloverjo, You don't.

// Tick Box M or tick box F or discuss with school - or alternatively run round house wailing and clutching head whilst muttering 'what is the world coming to'. //

The latter will be me then.
I've reported my own post - we'll leave it to editorial to decide.

I'm away now, there seems nothing one can say here at times.
Jim, //I'm not sure that's a reason for objecting to raising it now.//

I didn’t say it was a reason – simply that it is an issue.
Mamyalynne, your choice.
Why do you blame teachers? The article clearly says that this questionnaire is to be done before children start school!
Even in the face of complete absurdity, it always amazes me how some people are able to be so achingly 'right-on'.

And this is utterly absurd.

No amount of on-message cobblers will detract from the fact that 4 year olds will not have a meaningful opinion. They just won't.

Earlier in this thread somebody stated there are more than two genders. Without wishing to be deliberately obtuse (I'll leave that to ummm if his/her two posts on this thread are anything to go by) what are they? Transfluidlinearcuriousbifurcatedismorphic, or whatever, is not a gender for a 4 year old. Gender for a 4 year old is sex. They are a boy or a girl. They will not have a subjective opinion on what they 'think' they are, and no amount psychobabble arsewater can detract from this.
Genders are the new art appreciation. Make it up to suit as you go along.
If your child doesn't have a meaningful opinion, deskdiary, then the choice is simple for you- don't ask them (it's not compulsory) and just tick the relevant box. I'm sure that's what maybe 99% of parents will do. For the other 1% some might have issues they want to explore with the school or discuss sensitively with their child- and that can be done carefully without saying "okay fill this form son/are you bi or what"
Basically a clumsy attempt by one Council to be 'inclusive' is the subject of this thread. They stated that if parents are unwilling to tick a male or female box they should talk to the school. Daft, but harmless.

To sex up the lame story a bit, all kinds of untruths have been attached to it...
- the 4 year olds have been asked to specify their gender - They haven't.
- this is taking away their innocence - It isn't.
- they had a list of 25 genders to choose from - No they didn't.
- the parents had to do this - Wrong it was not compulsary.

People peddling those lies have an agenda as equally as nasty as the Council. Why not just stick to the facts instead of making stuff up?
Good post Gromit. I'm surprised a staunchly 'left' supporting newspaper like the Mirror would go down this route of twisting a story in this way.
I expect the 4 year olds can determine their gender by choosing their favourite icon on their iphone.. Oh and which toilet they prefer..
I Spain there is a gender called caballeros ....they don't surely?
