There seems to be two main problems here.
One....Having the gun on the first place, although I accept that this is unlikely to change anytime soon.
Two....why were the kids able to get at the gun ? If they were placed in proper child seats, and/or the gun has been removed from the car before they got in, the accident couldn't have happened.
But this sort of accidental shooting by young children is not uncommon in America. Every now and then, a child gets his Mom's gun out of her handbag and shoots someone dead with it.
Why isn't simple logic and common sense not seem to occur to, admittedly some, Americans ?

stuey - //I imagine that in some remote part of the World, people comment upon the fact that we pretty well all own cars and quite often accidentally kill each other with them. //
That analogy has been used before, and it doesn't fly.
The purpose of a car is to transport people and accidental damage and death is an unfortunate and unintentional by-product.
The purpose of a gun is to shoot people - that is what it is designed to do, and death is the intended end result.

Stuey....the big difference between us and the Americans, in addition to their inability to speak English properly, and brew a decent beer, is that if this had happened even once over here, handguns would have been banned, if they had been available in the first place, but over there...........nothing ever happens.
Accidental shootings are like London buses...there will be another along in a minute.
But if the kids has been secured in the car properly..........

well if you get your knickers untwisted andy, I was basically slating the whole US approach to gun noncontrol. My statements were trying to critique the standard outpourings we get from every gun related atrocity from the US. We have the same discussion 300 times a year, I was merely trying another approach. Maybe I found some unexpected NRA supporters.
