Not that I have any particular issue with this one. At least the women are being allowed to participate so that is something. But I think it really shows how the West has moved on with regard to freedoms for women that simply does not exist in some other cultures.

Yes. It shows that in the West it's mandatory for this sort to be played by women wearing the absolute minimum, allowing a certain percentage of male viewers to 'appreciate the sport'.
The Egyptian women have the freedom from worrying about body issues, slipping out of their tops, the bikini bottoms creeping up their bum, straps snapping. They can concentrate on the sport.

Can't help but wonder who has the real freedom here.
I agree with both of the posters above.
The Beach Volleyball 'uniform' was designed for the viewer not the participant.
it was only last night while channel hopping that i happen upon a match being shown .

I did think , look at that , those women are not wearing much , are they ?
Then again it's common attire on nearly all beaches

I'm surprised that the Egyptian team are participating in the matches , though
God forbid that any of those sports women have cellulite, stretch marks, birth marks or anything else deemed imperfect as the media will be rip them to shreds.

Yes, very fit, slim women can have cellulite and stretch marks.
Why be surprised the Egyptian team are participating ?
I wonder would Egyptian sports programmes have shown the games?
It's good that they're allowed to compete, whatever they're wearing.
What are those two vertical black bands that appear to come out of one of the German's bikini bottoms?

Well the German women dont HAVE to wear bikini's.

I doubt the freedom is the other way for the Egyptians though.

Yes, I wondered that myself Prudie.
"It shows that in the West it's mandatory for this sort to be played by women wearing the absolute minimum".

That's a clever and original conclusion: the German girls' "uniforms" are mandated, the Egyptian girls' uniforms have been chosen freely.

"The Egyptian women have the freedom from worrying about body issues...
Can't help but wonder who has the real freedom here."

"I agree with both of the posters above. The Beach Volleyball 'uniform' was designed for the viewer not the participant.".

Yes, the sort of "arguments" fundamentalist Muslims make for the oppressive dress code which their religion imposes on one half of its followers. I can't think of any honourable reason why a liberal Westerner would repeat them. Do any of you think the Egyptian sportswomen WANT to be dressed as they are?

A lot of athletes (inc. footallers) wear those 'stripes'. They are believe to aid muscle/tendon support although the reality of this is doubted elsewhere.
Its the best Women's event of the Olympics :-)

//Why be surprised the Egyptian team are participating ?//

Well ,given that muslims believe that all females should be covered up in public and show as little flesh as possible ; one would have thought that they would not participate in a sport , where quite the opposite is the case
Well I don't play much volley ball nowadays but I still think I would rather play in my budgie smugglers than my parka.
the egyptian competitors lost their match.

i wonder whether that was because the german team were more skilful, or whether there was a degree of their outfits impeding free movement on the field of play?
Bazile.... All Muslims ?
Bazile. Are you missing the point of this thread? The women WERE appropriately " covered "

Do the men's' beach volleyball teams were mankinis?

No.

They were baggy vest tops and mid thigh shorts.

Female volleyball players have two choices - tiny bikini or bodysuit.

Cards on the table...there's a reason why a certain number of chaps watch beach volleyball.

Sit a bloke down in front of three games...and then ask him the score of any of the games and he will shrug.
