Not that I have any particular issue with this one. At least the women are being allowed to participate so that is something. But I think it really shows how the West has moved on with regard to freedoms for women that simply does not exist in some other cultures.

To me neither outfits looks particularly comfy - one a bit too warm (though I'm sure the fabric is breathable) , the other rather too skimpy and seems to lead to much gusset rearranging.

Why on earth are some of you people so eager to defend this utter stupidity? You're doing oppressed women no favours whatsoever. This ridiculous outfit is imposed upon these Egyptian athletes - they have no choice. What is so wonderful about that? Which of you would want to participate in a game of volleyball in 80 degrees dressed like that? Forget the virtue signalling and get real!

naomi, the bikinis were for years imposed on all women players. It was only when the rules were relaxed to permit Islamic clothing that the requirement for skimpy clothing was dropped. On the whole, I think that's a step forward.

If you are female and you come from Egypt or some other country where the women dress modesty, would you really want to be seen jumping around on the beach in a skimpy bikini? I doubt it. I would think that the women from that team would have felt much more comfortable in those outfits. I am from the West but if I went to certain parts of Africa, I wouldn`t necessarily want to wander around topless. Same difference (as they say). We shouldn`t impose our Western "values" on other women.

quite so, ummmm. (A big "if" in my case.) The thing was, men weren't required to play in budgie smugglers, it was only women who were required to show off their beach bodies. So that's a step towards equality, which is fine by me.

And the Egyptian male volleyball team are not required to play fully covered as the women’s team are.

From reading some of these posts one could be forgiven for thinking the main complaint concerns the ‘uniform’ the rest of the world wear – but that isn’t the issue so I’ll ask again. Why on earth are some of you people so eager to defend this utter stupidity?
