Not that I have any particular issue with this one. At least the women are being allowed to participate so that is something. But I think it really shows how the West has moved on with regard to freedoms for women that simply does not exist in some other cultures.

So if your 5ft. 0. Size 16. Beech volleyball may not be a sport for them. ?
"Cards on the table...there's a reason why a certain number of chaps watch beach volleyball."

Cards on the table, SP - I don't watch it. Cards on the table - I do find the German girls more attractive than their opponents.

But my point was about oppressive dress codes. There is something perverse about today's feminism which has redefined "choice" such that it is the Western women who chooses to wear attractive, even sexy clothes who is now the oppressed women, while the woman in the sack is the free one.
Well if you're 5ft and size 16 you're probably not agile enough to play
The influence (a malign one in my opinion) of radical Islam over the lives of women in the past few decades is well illustrated in this article and its accompanying photographs:

I've seen photos of Afghan women over the decades (pre-Taliban onward) demonstrating the same point.

A bit of anecdotal evidence from an AB local: Naomi mentioned a few years ago how she had seen Egypt's women moving from largely Western dress to more conservative Islamic dress.

A safe prediction, I think, that Erdogan's Turkey will go even more rapidly down the same path as what's left of Attaturk's legacy is trashed.
Here we go again....this constant obsession with what some women wear !

What difference does it make, as long as they are allowed to take part by their nations ?

//Bazile. Are you missing the point of this thread? The women WERE appropriately " covered "//

Not in the eyes of the muslim faith , they are not
does it not also highlight some similarities?

Exactly, Mikey. What kind of obsession is it that forces its sportswomen to dress in a way which must be uncomfortable for them (especially in the heat), restricts their freedom of movement, and (in the context of the "beach") makes them look stupid?.

I'll answer my own question: the obsession does nothing to enhance these women as athletes, but it does make them undesirable sexually. In the good old days the Germaine Greer's would have been yelling "patriarchy" in the face of this blatant mysogyny. Why aren't you and they doing that now?

//it does make them undesirable sexually

Why. V/E? Do you just mean less desirable to some?

Maybe so, Fiction Factory. But if some are turned on by women in sacks the dress code will have failed its objective - to prevent men getting excited by woman wearing provocative clothing.
They are less likely to get sunburn.
...and more likely to get rickets?
Actually what the Egyptian lady is wearing is very similar to what I wear when I go swimming - swimming leggings and a long sleeved swim top - particulary useful in warm climates as I burn easily - don't see anything wrong with it myself!

Fine, Islay, that's your choice. But do you think that the Egyptian girls chose to dress like that? Maybe they would have preferred to wear bikinis. Maybe not. Who knows? But I don't think their sporting association would have allowed them any choice but the "modest" one.
Personally, I don't want to watch a sport where the womens backsides are hanging out and half their knickers are up their chuffers!

The others look comfortable and easy to wear - what business is it of yours what they wear?
Islay

Backsides hanging out and chuffers (whatever that is, one can only guess) is not the appropriate language for a family site.

/// The others look comfortable and easy to wear - what business is it of yours what they wear? ///

What a very rude person.
Islay, I must echo that that sort of expression is really not acceptable.
Islay - oh my, look what you have done with your chuffing comment!
