Unquestionably not racism.

Absolutely and definitely not flipping racist in any way shape or form.

However, with 313 monthly users, it's inevitable that a teeny tiny fraction will find something offensive.

I bet you could tweet a photo of a sunset in Gloucestershire, or a helicopter landing, or a plate of Gorgonzola and at least one of the 313 million Twitter users would be outraged.

So why is so much oxygen expended on them?

Unquestionably not racism.
I think the first 4 letters say it all - make any ridiculous statement you like without ever having to justify it.
Absolute tosh.
I read this yesterday, sighed and rolled my eyes.

How on earth could that be considered racist? If the fastest person on the planet happened to be white then no one would bat an eyelid. It's pathetic and terribly sad!
"It's pathetic and terribly sad!"

A description that could probably be accurately used on 99.9999% of Twitter posts.
Of course it's racist, she should have photoshopped his face white first before putting that up !

I'm unsure Twitter has much to do with it. You find all sorts everywhere. Twitter is just a convenient place for folk to express their opinions. And there is always someone wanting to find an excuse to play their favourite card; race in this instance.
I'm not quite sure why so many people get outraged......and neither am I sure why their outrage generates so many column-inches in the newspapers.
Is this a new sport for the 2020 olympics - two legged dressage ?
newspapers everywhere are shedding journalists. Those who remain have to find stories, and Twitter is an easy place to do so. Not just stories but quotes. Quotes from total strangers, mostly, rather than interested parties, of course, but they fill space. (And just occasionally they're eyewitness reports of events, and those can be genuinely useful.)

You can see it on all sorts of news websites

The racist word is misused way too much these days.
Social media apps: All tools of Beelzebub himself.
You only have to think about all the tosh posted on answerbank which has a miniscule number of users compared to twitter. Opinions from a handful anonymous twits on the internet shouldn't form the basis of a sensible news story.

I agree entirely with your sentiment, but aren't you also expending oxygen on them?

you're right of course.

but.

don't you feel just a teensy-weensy bit suspicious when someone starts their defence with "I'm not a racist, but..."
Outrage always sounds utterly exhausting to me - why folks choose it as a hobby is anyone's guess.
ludwig, why are you shouting at us ?
I think a cull is needed, twitface! PMSL!
It's just the echo in here, Ron.
Ron... Ron... Ron...
If you give enough people a social platform, you will find someone who will be offended by the sun rising tomorrow.

In the mean time - working towards that ultimate goal - is this level of tut.
