/// Supporters held a minute's applause 10 minutes into the club's Championship game against Huddersfield Town. ///

This is from a club who originally refused to to honour the victims of the Birmingham pub bombings.

Play the white man, AOG. We shouldn't speak ill of the dead, and all that.
They are 'celebrating' a former footballer.

Times change and the club would doubtless mark the passing of the victims of a similar event to the Birmingham Pub Bombings.
Their applause was purely a collective display of remembering a footballer and talent whose life went out of control and ended in an early death.

Disappointed you can't see that.

It matters not one iota how good a footballer he was, if he had been an electrician, a plumber or even a Lord, what he was alleged to have done, doesn't warrant respect.
But he *was* a footballer and that is what and where his life/career was being celebrated.
From a link previously posted by AOG

///Brother Kenroy told how Atkinson, who had been suffering depression after dialysis treatment for kidney failure, tried to strangle his elderly father Ernest at his home in Telford, Shropshire.
Kenroy, 53, told The Sun: 'My brother had lost it. He was in a manic state and depressed — out of his mind and ranting.///

So we already know he was acting 'out of character' when the alleged attack occurred.

What the supporters were doing was honouring the memory of a former club player who appeared to be a popular member of the team.

So, Yes it was appropriate imo.

As for linking it to Birmingham, just how low can you get?

There's always the basement Baldric, sadly.
I'm not sure it was appropriate.

Too many outstanding questions at the moment.

"In your opinion" fair enough, but please allow other to voice their opinions, hence the reason for my thread.

/// As for linking it to Birmingham, just how low can you get? ///

no need to be so rude Baldric, and I was not linking it to Birmingham as you incorrectly put, I was simply comparing the action taken by Villa on the two occasions.
As stated, that was a long time ago.....40 years, or so.

AV would respond differently today.

Thank you for your non contributory but confrontational answer.
'Confrontational'?- if that is what pointing out stirring for the sake of it is, then I'll accept that epithet.

///"In your opinion" fair enough, but please allow other to voice their opinions///

Perhaps you would be kind enough to point out where I have denied anyone else the opportunity to voice their opinions?

Yes the bombing was, but this is about the club refusing to hold a minute’s silence to mark the 40th anniversary of the atrocity.

"Aston Villa initially refused the group's request to mark the 40th anniversary of the tragedy, but later did a U-turn after the Birmingham Mail stepped in and angry supporters complained."

Then may I suggest that you must learn to put an end to your stirring.
It was a much appreciated show by the fans too as I recall.
I'll do my best AOG, ta for the advice.
Yes, I have followed hc's links and realised that.

I can't see quite why AV initially declined to mark the 40th anniversary but I read that they relented and it was appreciated by the families of those killed.

It still doesn't really compare to the marking of Atkinson's death, though.
