/// Supporters held a minute's applause 10 minutes into the club's Championship game against Huddersfield Town. ///

This is from a club who originally refused to to honour the victims of the Birmingham pub bombings.

But the ending wasn't different.
Introducing an 'if' is odd - we would be very unlikely to be discussing any fans applauding him if that was the result of this incident.

Their applause was respect and sadness at a talent lost and a future cut short and a family grieving the loss of a son.
The deceased was clearly a very unwell man. I wonder if his treatment had any impact on his mental health? I am certainly aware that those with advanced kidney failure can suffer significant mental impairment as a result of their condition. I rather suspect that had he not died, he may have ended up being sectioned.

Was it appropriate? Well those who took part certainly thought so. I can see why, he was a former member of the club and as such the fans would have considerable sympathy with his loss.

I don’t recall there being any outrage at the various testimonials for George Best who was a self confessed alcoholic, a twice convicted drink driver and who had to fend off various allegations of assault. But then he wasn’t black, was he?
not sure why footballers think theyre so special...dont think youll find production line workers in factories stopping and applauding ex workers...
Did he actually try and kill his dad?

ummmm

/// But the ending wasn't different. ///

And I am sure we can all rejoice at that, especially his father.

In the meantime we have an alleged attempted murder, which is still very serious in my eyes.
Baz, do we know that Dalian thought he was 'special' or did you mean the supporters?

I know of tributes being held in workplaces, I'm sure we don't know when they all happen.
yes randy he did
we know this is true as AOG has told us ....

And why was all this cut short, due entirely by his own chosen lifestyle and the alleged attempted killing of his own farther.

No one forced him to do any of these things, he was once a famous footballer and a millionaire to boot.

Nothing to clap about in my opinion.

Ah!!!! I wondered how long it would be.

Regarding your George Best reference, I can't ever remember him trying to murder his father either.

//No excuse, if the ending to this sad affair had been different//

It wasn't, let's stick to facts shall we?
///Nothing to clap about in my opinion.///

Fair enough.......you are entitled to think like that; but others holding a contrary view are not, by definition, wrong.
You are indeed fortunate to have reached your mature age and never attended a funeral or memorial to someone who died as a result of their chosen lifestyle yet still paid tribute to them.

I unfortunately have.

Yes don't just take my word for it, it is widely reported by his own brother, that his now dead brother tried to strangle their father.

And how could you possibly know that.

And was that person killed by the cops while attempting to commit murder?
No, none of them were. But then you know the fans were not applauding any harm this young man had allegedly done don't you?

Interesting article here on the move in certain areas fron silence to applause.

The difference is George Best was at least convicted of something.

If you care to read the full quote, AOG, you will see that Atkinson told his father he had already murdered his three siblings (which is palpably untrue) - he had a tube in his shoulder for his treatment he had ripped out. This was not a man in possession of his faculties. I cannot help thinking that this may suggest a defence of non-insane automatism. Something clearly was not right.

Perhaps you should write a letter of complaint to AV stating how inappropriate it was that the supporters should have remembered a man who gave them joy some years earlier. I am sure they will listen to you.
i think that the Chelsea fans were innocent and should be applauded for pushing the man off the train.
AOG

I think it would have looked really odd if Aston Villa fans had not recognised his death.

Is it the applause that you find questionable, or the tribute itself. Do you think a minute's silence before the game would have been better?

Also, you wrote:

"And why was all this cut short, due entirely by his own chosen lifestyle and the alleged attempted killing of his own farther."

What kind of lifestyle did he lead?

How was it a contributory factor.
